This is kind of weird, but Weezer.

My experience is pretty limited with Jazz basses, hence why this clip surprised me:

I've never heard one sound fat like that. Usually when I've played one it sounds farty/mid scooped. Like, I said I haven't done much fooling twss, fuck off. Is it just the neck pup soloed or something? SOUNDS AWESOME.

And check out the Travis Bean action.

Man that does sound good... It's the TV and Late Show Mastering For T.V. Sound... Same reason Weezer sounds good on Radio...

It's Mastering that you are looking for... :wha?:

Keep in mind, there's always a fuck ton of stuff going on that can't be seen. The bass is only one piece of the equation. You have amps, processors, fx, yada yada....

You can get in there with the right neck pickup solo'd, Jazz basses don't have to be in either ultra scoop mode or wuss bridge mode like you always hear :idk:
The Dimarzio Model J neck or the one in SBV-500s, for example.
Also the dude has some moves at 2:10.

It also sounds pretty normal to me (sounds great) but I wouldn't describe my experience with jazz basses as farty or mid scooped.

Maybe it was just the bass/rig/etc. you played through? :idk:

Yeah, I'm kind of thinking I dismissed it too quickly. Probably user error.

Yeah that sounds pretty normal to me, I've never thought of jazz basses as being scooped or farty and mine sounds nice and fat when I want it to. Could just have been whatever amps you used one with? Or a particularly crappy bass or something.

Also, Weezer were so fucking good back then.

AFAIK, that's just his franken-jazz bass with a 200 watt Matamp OR200, with the drive up pretty high. The only pedal used back then was a green muff, but that wasn't until the next year, when Pinkerton came out. I should know, I built this a few years back... Image

In my experience, when you hear a jazz abss sounding good and fat, its because the player had the sense to use the neck pickup, and play with some technique, which sounds fat, instead of the bridge pickup that goes CLANG.

Reminds me of Dimarzio Model Js with my Timmy pedal. Beefy, gritty goodness. I'm going the other direction now though, taking out the Model Js and rolling back the neck pup a little. Listening to this clip might make me regret taking out those pups.

I guess I just have to get another bass to put those pups in.

Eh, when I first started I didn't want a jazz bass cause it was for jazz.
