I've had friends who were traynor fans, and I remember they sound pretty awesome but ran into problems sourcing some tubes and components? Maybe a bad tech.

Re: Deciding on a new amp is hard! (Sovtek?)
I doubt that was the case but it still would not be difficult for someone with the internet to find old caps and resistors. That said, most techs would not bother to hunt NOS caps and they would change out all of the caps in proper maintenance practices. Again, other than the iron, there is nothing 'exotic' in these amps. That iron is amazing though. They certainly do not make transformers like that any more - just massive.kurmudgeon wrote:maybe he meant period-correct, NOS parts? whatever, axe the guy
Maybe the tech wanted the amp and told your buddy to sell it so he could have a friend pick it up for him.

Re: Deciding on a new amp is hard! (Sovtek?)
exactly, for some reason some people in the music industry find ways to just be downright insidious. The amps are very serviceable as they're all point-to-point on turret board and have the schematic on the inside of the head cab/chassis. I own a YBA-1, a YBA-3 (needs servicing bad :[ ) a YBA-4 and two of the solid state bass heads. Love Traynor but it's just too bad their prices have increased substantially in the last decade. Sorry to get off topic
I'd definitely just scour craigslist for a Bassman or YGM or MIG 50.

Holy crap! I'm picking it up tomorrow. I'll let you know what's up.
Also, just get an SVT and be done with it!

The only thing that would be hard to find for any Traynor that I can think of would be the 7027 tubes they use in some of the amps.
My YBA-1 had them. That's all I can think of.

Yes - but changing the amp to use EL34s or 6L6 is incredibly easy. Any decent tech should be able to handle that.

Yeah, I've seen people stick all kinds of tubes in there.
People really aren't afraid to radically modify these.

Re: Deciding on a new amp is hard! (Sovtek?)
Not yet. The Sovtek I was going to try got sold before I could try it out and the local Craigslists don't have anything remotely close to what I'm looking for...There's a current drought in those three amps around the Northeast!
