Volume pedal, need some suggestions.

Post by Dark Barn »

I'm looking for a volume pedal that lets through no signal at all in heel down, and preferably doesn't affect tone across the entire audio range. I'd be using it to operate swells from an always on tabletop drone synth which will be run through my bass rig. I want to be able to blend it all the way out rather than turn it off/on by hand. I have almost no experience with volume pedals but I gather that some let a little signal through when in heel down.

Also other recommendations are welcome if you know of a mixer or blender that allows hands free exp pedal operation and can blend a channel out entirely.

Maybe something like this: http://missionengineering.com/shop/the-vm-1/
It looks like it's silent with heel down and it also has the mute switch with toe down.

I'm seeing if Preston/Wounded Paw can build an expression control into his small 4 channel mixer, I'm hoping he can set me up with an all-in-one solution. I think an active mixer with expression control on one channel would suit me more than a volume pedal in line to a mixer. I'll post back with his response for anyone interested.

I know everyone has been on the edge of their seat wondering how this will play out.

So Preston from Wounded Paw is going to build me one of his four channel mixers with an expression jack to control one of the channels. Should work like a charm. Here's his direct replies to my questions about the mixer.

attenuated (silent)?

Yes that's correct.

Would it be possible to have one built without the LED?

Sure, no problem.

Would it be possible to have one built with expression jacks to control the
level on one or two of the channels?

Sure, no problem there either. The expression jacks could switch off the volume controls on the mixer when plugged in and have normal volume control when not, ie. the expression pedal takes the place of the normal volume control only when it's plugged in.
Adding this option to the standard mixer would only add about $10 per expression jack, the only problem is figuring out where to put them on the box but I'm sure there's room somewhere.

Another product I'm looking at is the Expression Blender, would it work as a
2-channel mixer if nothing is plugged into the send jack?

Essentially yes, it would act like a 2 channel mixer. The only difference being that the return of the effect loop has the phase inversion section before it hits the blend pot but that shouldn't really make any difference.

That's all folks!

Yes, I'd been considering subscribing to this thread. Seriously considering it and I never subscribe to threads. So, yeah, glad the drama's resolved.

You've got to tell us all about it when you get it though. I'm interested.
