Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special HB - Should I?

Post by theshoegazer »

I am so tempted for that price...

Anyone have any experience with these? I've always been wary of Squiers....

Holy SHIIIIII - that price!

Honestly, don't sweat it with Squier. Especially the VM and CV series, they are fantastic basses. When I wanted a fender-ish bass last winter, I went to GC and tried every Squier and Fender under $600 in the store. The Squier VMs and CVs blew the MIM fenders out of the water; they're simply better basses, and like half the price. I ended up with the standard VM Jag bass, with the P and J pickups, and I dig it a lot. Though, they didn't have the HB model there, so I don't have any direct experience with that one. If the HB was there, I might have come home with that one, honestly. I love buckers on bass.

Yeah, that price is nice. You'd be silly not to.

I bought it. I'll report back when it arrives. With pics! I'm thinking about staining/baking the neck for a darker looking finish....

Looks nice! My wife has a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale, and she loves it. I upgraded the electronics and the really bad, cheap-feeling knobs. It needed to be setup, as expected at that price point.

If you decide to do something with the neck, the popular options seem to be Tru-Oil (wipe on finish that looks pretty good), brown kiwi shoe polish (easy to do and nice looking results, but is it durable?), and Reranch neck tint (difficult and lengthy process, but great results).

I'm thinking about trying the Tru-Oil on my Cyclone.

Keep us updated! Maybe they'll still have this on sale when I can afford to buy gear again. Probably not, though :idk:

If I had the money, I'd buy a second to match the first one I bought elsewhere for about the same price.

The bass sounds fantastic. I've never had an active instrument before. The neck relief was a bit extreme from the factory so I'm tightening the truss and letting it settle overnight. Awesome bass for the price. I'm planning on staining/dying the neck dramatically darker and burning in a logo on the headstock. If you're on the fence and don't mind a bit of setting up from the factory I'd highly recommend picking one up.

Hmm. Didn't realize it was active. Do you prefer it w/ active electronics?
