Post by Greenfuz »

ok so I'm looking into buying an unloaded 8x10 bass cabinet, thinking of throwing some guitar speakers in it and having a beautiful monstrous guitar amp

how well would this work? what speakers should I throw in? I was thinkin jensens, since you can get em for around $40 each

It'll work just fine. Not a fan of 10's myself, but putting guitar speakers in a bass cab sounds like it would be awesome

10's aren't really that great on guitar... It'll probably sound like 8 practice amps... 12's are for guitar and 10's and 15's are generally for bass... There is a whole scientific reason why they sound better but I no have link...

Marshall made 8x12's, I know that. I'm not sure about 8x10's though

I like the way a guitar sounds through 10s. A buddy of mine had a Traynor combo that was a 4x10 and I loved the way it sounded when it broke up. He didn't like it and get a 4x12 cab. Pfft. Guitarists. You should be able to use it no problem. It might not be super efficient because of the tuning of the box and blahblahblah. Just go ahead and do it.

Marshall made more 8x10s than 8x12s.

10s sound just fine on guitars. Fender Super, Concert, Vibrolux, tweed Bassman. Ampeg VT-whatever it was that the Stones used in the 70s. For TGP corksniffers, some guys think the Marshall "Bluesbreaker" combo on that Mayall album was actually a 4X10 and not a 2X12 version.

10 versus 12 just tends to push the resonant point up a bit and have less floppy bass movement. If you're playing doom or 8 string guitar, you probably want the 12s. Otherwise its personal preference.

i think with 8x10s
id still need a 2x12
to dull the icepicks a bit
i got 4x10 in my combo
cant stand it w/out ext.cab
thats me and my bad ears though

That would just be the driver/amp combination.

I dont think theres anything inherently icepicky about tens, and with a sealed box like a fridge, there should me massive amounts of thump

I have one of those Marshall 8x10's. Bought it stripped too, put Jensens in it on the cheap and it sounds great! Made it closed back too (mine was open back when I got it, don't know if this was standerd of mine was altered) so I can use it for bass too

Marshall also made 6x10's as well. I'd buy the empty 8x10 and replace the baffle so it could be used as a 4x12 or a 3x12 and 1x10 or something. I would do one 15" and two 12"s that would rule!
