i feel like i wouldn't even know where to begin with ordering an inventory. so many parts in the world

Massive +1! When something runs low, I replace it! I would spend far too much time updating the spreadsheet and far too less time building. My 'technique' is to keep a 'Parts Order List' document file. My laptop is always handy when I am building so when I see the item running low I simply add it. When I place an order I bring up the sheet, take note of any new orders, make a quick once over of my parts organizers to make sure I have not missed anything, (if necessary) add those pieces to the list and make a note on the document (by italicising) that is has been ordered. When the parts land they are removed from the list. Repeat.
