You can find Crate Blue Voodoo half stacks used on craigslist or kijiji usually for pretty cheap. I'd also suggest an old Traynor YBM-1 head (for Marshall tonez) and a cheap cabinet. And then, there's always the Fender Bassman. Even if you can just afford the head can't you just use the cabinet you already have?

Traynors are out there, and sound great.
The Ampeg V series of amps are also great, and fairly inexpensive.
Clean head room for days.
And don’t forget Sunn, Sorado, Sorano, other S words etc. great sounding amps in your price range.
Go hang out, try as many different tube amps as you can, try boutique stuff you are never going to be able afford too. That way you’ll get a feel for what’s right for you and gives you the sound you want.
In the mean time just sit on your money and keep checking the used gear.

Get an older Peavey ultra! It's a kickass amp, built like a tank, and can be had fir pretty cheap on the bay. 3 channels, and the clean is good. Real good. The crunch and lead are also awesome!

Yes! I'm telling you, you won't regret it! I've got a Peavey Triumph PAG 60. It loves pedals, is stinking loud, is pretty dark (which was a plus for me), and has great clean headroom.
I've been through tons of amps big and small (vintage Fender Twin, a few Gibson Goldtones, Mesa boogie (yuk), etc.) And all tube. The Peavey is on the top of the list.

I got my modded Crate V18 for $250 with shipping off ebay.
It's brighter than the stock v18s, which are too mujddy for me.
