tele bass

Post by masked elwood »

so i did this tele bass for a friend (brass knuckle boys). really just a refin and electronics upgrade.
before i start....i'll say right here that fender has some issues when it comes to their prices. i have this cheap squire vintage modern telecaster bass that sells for around $300 sitting next to a custom shop precision that retails for over $4000 (they gave it to me though...they actually gave me both for services rendered). sure the CS has a chambered body and would be more comfortable for a little weak girly man but the tele isn't very heavy either. other than the weight, there isn't that much quality difference to justify the price difference. i just don't see why anyone would pay those huge prices rather than upgrading a low line fender or even a squire. maybe because i champion the beginners aspect of playing music and don't think gear really matters as much as we often think and obsess over. (i am very much included in that too....with my 5000000 guitars, amps and noisy crap.)
being that i normally change pickups on pretty much everything that i've ever owned that was made after 1970, it would make little sense to buy that CS shite. chances are i'm going to change the bridge too....so there really is no point.

ok....off my soapbox.

i wanted this to look like it was lost in a damp basement.

That's just jaw-dropping. Inga saw it and said, "was that fished out of the ocean???" It's amazing how spot-on it is. :wha?:

I'm with ya on Fender's price/quality-ratio issue. The Asian factories are just getting too good (= good for us, possibly bad for Fender America?).
The new Marauder I bought (MIC Fender, essentially a 5% upgrade on Squier CV in my experience)...if you replace the crappy bridge, shield it a bit better, and upgrade the output jack--the rest is indistinguishable in quality from my American Deluxe Fender (fit, finish, neck, fretjob).

Fuuuuuuck, that thing is beautiful. I could feel my tear ducts twitch a little.
I want one so bad...the looks for sure, but also the simplicity, that fatass pickup right next to the neck -- glorious.
I can't decide yet if this is the coolest bass ever, but it's up there.

man that makes me very happy to hear. i think tinting the neck green was a big step in helping achieve the look i wanted.
i want to take idea that a step or 2 further next time i do a rust-o job.

lol....i knew you'd dig it. i often thought about your bass monster while i did this one. ... that pickup is pretty awesome imo. i was going to change it to an old dimarzio X2N guitar pickup (they are great for bass) but the neck/string spacing on the tele bass is just a bit too wide so i decided against it. besides, the stock sounds good as it is and looks better.

'gomer approved' is hard to beat.
