Precision Bass Jr. - Got it! with pics.

Post by Mike »

I did my midtown pawn shop circuit while I was out this afternoon, and spotted a Fender Precision Bass Jr. in one of the shops. I told my wife about it, and she's interested. She is tiny-- just barely 5' tall-- and currently plays a VM Jag short scale. She has a hard time with 34" scale instruments. This P Jr. is apparently a 28.6" scale. It is very light, which is desirable to her.

They one in the pawn shop is listed at $250. I think I could easily talk them down to $150, probably lower based on my last purchase with them (Peavey Delta Blues, mint, listed at $350, out the door at $200). Ebay has three recent sales on similar basses-- $399, $395, $375.

It is currently unplayable, since it is missing half the strings. It seems to be in decent shape. I am capable of setting it up and doing minor repairs. If we got it, I would strip the black finish and either leave it natural, or repaint if the grain sucks.

Have any of you guys ever played one of these? Are they any good?

Thanks!

Mike

I've no experience, but if you can talk 'em down to $150 I think it'd be worth it just to find out.

Yeah, a 28" scale bass sounds interesting enough to be worth trying out.

Go for it, with the short scale and standard P pickup it should sound great when you get it back up and running.

Got it.

They said they could do it for $200. I had brought $173 with me. They didn't accept my price, so we headed to the parking lot to talk about if she wanted it at that price. Less than a minute later, they whistled me in, and did it for $173, with a brand new Fender strap, and a really nice padded gig bag. Now to get some strings, and probably a new nut.
