Hey check out what ma band did

Post by my bloody television »

just got a couple preliminary mixes from the album we recorded (in our house) at school this year. There are some level changes that need to be addressed, but let me know what you guys think! I'm curious to hear your opinions! :bob:

-edit-

for those of you that care, there's extensive use of TBD in Sample Song and What Could Have Been :idk:

I am really liking this.
The drums could use a little more volume otherwise it sounds good.

I just listened to "Shallow" and I must say that it sounds great for a mix. Maybe it should have a bit of compression, and the vocals that appear at about 1:25ish in stereo seem to need a bit of something to them to fit into the song better. I get that you wanted them to juxtapose, so reverb would be out, but maybe some light EQ or something else. On the other hand, the guitars sound so lush and great. They're my favorite part of the song. Can't wait to hear them all when they're fully mixed and mastered! :)
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

Really good stuff! I dig the lush and atmospheric quality of the songs. Really like all the guitar work and vocals. On "What could have been" I find the staccato keys (around :28) a bit harsh or maybe just too far up in the mix. The rest of the song feels like a powerful swirling guitar tune to me and that element seems a bit out of place to me there, especially when all the guitars are dropped out. Very cool tune tho. :thumb:

Interesting mix of sounds. I hear My Morning Jacket mixed with some Jane's Addiction. I really dig the guitars. Pretty sweet. I don't think the drum sound fits the rest of the music though. The snare just needs more snap and crack. Too much thump in it if that makes any sense. :idk:

After further listening on the song What Could Have Been the vocals are too low in the mix and the guitar parts are sort of herky jerky during the verse/chorus I believe. The intro is fantastic though and reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age.

I also can't hardly hear any bass guitar or kick drum.

Hope these comments are helpful! I'm not trying to be an a-hole! :erm:

no not at all! this is all very helpful. I honestly just got the mixes the day before I put em up here, and I've been having pretty similar reactions for everything. When you say the drums don't fit the music, are you talking EQ or style? I agree about the vocals on WCHB and I agree with sjtele about the organ on the verse - way too present.

I think we should be able to bring the bass and kick drum up a bit, but all these tracks were recorded live aside from vocals and sample overdubs in a shitty on campus apartment...i.e. there's a good bit of bleed. We tried our best to isolate things somewhat so we could fuck with levels if need be, but it isn't perfect.

thanks again for all the responses, I really appreciate it!

Probably a little bit of both. Style wise the snare sounds like it belongs in a death metal band. EQ wise it's got too much mud and not enough mids or highs. Kinda hard to explain, hope that helps.
