I need a looper!

Post by Atrox »

Well I'm new to the looping game and have no idea what is good for me and what is not. I want to be able to do:

- record something and then solo over it
- record multiple layers for ambient stuff
- maybe store the recorded loops for songwriting and developing ideas. I can see me using that in the future

Well that's it. I need no effects or multiple inputs or tapping or drum patterns.

So, what's good and simple to use and would fit my needs?

Yep. Particularly the Boss ones, I believe. The RC-3 can store and export loops as well.

Is the digitech any good? Compared to the boss models it's a lot cheaper...

A friend of mine has an old jamman and it was kinda wonky. Maybe the new ones are easier to use though?

Bommerang III.

I have a Boss RC-2... great... but you can't keep your loop (it's ok with me as I use it more as a beat box).

The boomerang is wow, but a bit overkill!
Looks like the Boss is the one...

I love the RC-2. (You can save 11 loops. I never really needed that. So if that is really important the JamMan Solo would be more your thing. And the price went, at least here in europe, down on these...)

I use a DigiTech JamMan Stereo and it works really really well. What sold it for me was the ability to use a regular SD card to store loops on as well (thus doubling your memory capability on the unit) as well as upload - via USB - the loops to your computer. Their program on the comp allows you to organize and label the loops, which has been handy for remembering what exactly you have on your unit. Granted, not using it for a couple of months and then coming back to hear what you recorded and forgot about is always cool.

When I was looking for a looper, Boss didn't have anything near the functionality of DigiTech. No idea if they've reworked their loopers or not, but it was really old tech then.

After playing a show on the weekend, I can recommend the RC-30, as the guy on before me was doing some amazing stuff using one. I was watching him the whole time and it seems pretty straightforward. Tonally and volume-wise there were absolutely no issues.

I thought I'd want a boomerang but for the sort of things I'm looking at doing, the RC-30 will suit me fine.

Hope that at least helps a bit. :)

I'm thinking about getting a Jamman Solo too, although there's a new version being released soon (the XT). I'm not exactly sure how the new version differs from the original Solo, although I believe it is stereo and the price is closer to that of the RC-3.
