Gretsch Love

Post by Gearmond »

Gretschs rule. it sucks that most people get 'em for either country or rockabilly because of the big name brands, they're probably the most tonally diverse, potentially. so lets talk about all the lovely guitars they've made

some of my favs:

(or any duo jet with dynasonic pickups really. namely dissun: http://altomusic.com/shop/images/produc ... 846499.jpg )
,':{I> ... your move, Trebek.

I've had a Gretsch Corvette for a buncha years now. Great guitar. The one in this pic is missing the trem arm. That pyramid'ish thing at the tail is a Burns vibrato. Awesome wide necks on these, and solid, heavy old wood.

That guitar is mighty pretty, but damn is it expensive.

Love these, and they are extremely affordable.

There is a tiny, I mean tiny shop in michigan, guy has like 10 guitars, and the shop is the entry way to his house. Last time I was there he had a 1950's Gretsch that was designed by some big time classical player. Everything on it was suspended, I mean NOTHING touched the body, apparently the guitarist was adament about that. Anyways, the guy said it had never seen production and that was one of the prototypes. He had a $4,500 price tag on it. When the name was fresh in my head, I did a search and saw one that had sold for over $12,000. Wish I could remember the name.

i love Gretsches so much i hang out on the Gretsch Pages forum (under a different nick). i've wanted a White Falcon ever since i first saw the back cover of 4 Way Street, but i like the 1958 Country Gentleman reissue even more. i currently own a Pro Jet which was the first project guitar i ever worked on...i put Dynasonic PUs in which are some of the greatest single-coils EVAH, and added a bar bridge and B3C Bigsby. Joe Carducci, the head of sales for Gretsch/FMIC, played it at one of the Roundup events which folks organize for people in different areas of the country and said that "it feels just like a Duo Jet."

Gretsch is also notable for its customer-community efforts...Joe spends a fair amount of time travelling to Roundup events--which can be a single-day event or a long-weekend thing where folks stay at the facility--and giving away preposterous amounts of swag. i've seen folks win a Black Phoenix and a green Country Club in prize drawings at these events. he's also amazingly accessible...if you have a question, suggestion, or issue all you have to do is e-mail Joe and he takes care of you.

and the new budget-line Electromatics are an incredible value for money.

Yea man, It's a really old, def guy, who is able to run it out of his house due to being grandfathered through zoning laws. He use to be in a pretty well known true country band back in the 40's-50's. It's like the size of a bedroom. It's one of the places I go to buy strings even when I don't need them, and I bought a glass slide last time I was there I think. You even have to ring the doorbell so he can get up and unlock the door and such haha. I can't remember where it is exactly, it's sort of between Plymouth and Westland. Maybe 20mins from Ypsi.

Also gonna be checking out Dennis' and Fast Eddie's when I'm in town this week.
