I saw Red Fang and Black Tusk last night

Post by jrmy »

They ruled, and now I hurt.

Ouchie.

Also, while my pain is in no way related to me engaging in actual moshing, there was a pretty crazy pit during Red Fang's set. I counted at least three linebacker-y looking 350+ lb dudes in there, to say nothing of the wiry crazy amped up lunatics who were popping around like jumping beans on meth. There was one guy who was particularly annoying, who kept trying to mess with people outside of the pit with a "wow! Isn't this great? I'm fucking with you, but it's really fun, right?" look on his face... until he slammed into a woman who couldn't have been taller than 5 feet (if that) who just clearly wanted to watch the show without interruption. And so she scolded him at the top of her lungs and punched him about twenty times in the chest and face. After that, he slunk off to the side, and I didn't see him pop up again for the rest of the night.

I have to admit, I was pretty stoked for that woman.

Glad you enjoyed the show.

(I will comment, however, that moshing outside of a hardcore show is lame. Very out of context nowadays.)

Really wanted to go to that show - or to KEN Mode and Revocation over at Great Scott - but I had to work.

Honestly, I was kind of shocked that the pit broke out, and the Red Fang dudes seemed to be, too (though it looked like they took it as a compliment). I was expecting a lot of bopping and headbanging, but not full on aggro slamming.

Kids these days! :oldrant:

Nah - I'm going to a show in RI on Thursday, so I hope to do something relatively normal on Friday, like... sleep.

Yeah, just as with everything else, slamming has been co-opted and watered down by the mainstream.

Oh, well. It's inevitable.

SEE?!? PITS MAKE PEOPLE FEEL BAD! AND NOT JUST CUZ THEY'RE BLEEDING!

Actually, I don't have that much of a problem with mosh pits. I just wish they were, like, somewhere off to the side, so the people who actually wanted to watch the show could, y'know, watch the show. Without worrying about getting clobbered by fancy kick swing shit dude (or dudette).

Yeah. I agree. It's like you're either pressed up against the stage, or you're all the way in the back, because no one wants near the pit so its just a giant void in the center of the room for the entire show

I hate pits.

Basically anything that prevents me from standing still and concentrating on the music and the hands of the musicians.

Yep, this. Last night wasn't too bad for me, distance-wise. I was maybe one-person deep from the back edge of the pit, which put me maybe 8 - 12 feet from the stage. I suck at guesstimating distances, but I was definitely not at the back of the room. As a side-effect, though, I really had to keep my wits about me, and did almost get knocked over a few times. Ah, well. T'was fun.

And in gearhead news, I was shocked to realize that Aaron from Red Fang plays a FUCKIN' CORT BASS!!!!! WHAAAAAAAAAT??!?! But then, he does appear to play it through a Sunn, so monster toanz were had by all.

Yeah, I mean, I like to bop around, and cannot stop myself from headbanging a bit to music that I like. Even some jostling and jumping is cool with me. But when I worry that I'm gonna get knocked on my ass onto a beer-soaked concrete floor? Not fun, nohow.
