"Maps" Chimes

Post by CBA »

Hi hi.

How would you go about getting the bell-like echo tone thing in the chorus? I know that Nick from YYY used a drum machine to get the sound, but I'm wondering how some of you might do the sound yourselves.

My best guess with what I have would be to do some sort of gated fuzz through a Whammy pedal with maybe like the El Capistan warbly echo set for two or three repeats. EDIT: Plus maybe with some ring modulation. WHO THE HELL KNOWS.

But it's been a while since I tried it, and I don't think I had a delay at the time.

EDIT:

More audible in their song "Y Control":

I think a warbly delay is definitely needed, it doesn't feel like just one delay judging by the weird multiple rhythms of the delays. I think with the multihead mode of the capistan you could probably get something that sounds reeeaaallllllyyyy close. I think running the delay pre-dirt with the tone-knob rolled back would be all that's needed.

I've been able to get a similar bell-like tone with the tone-switch on my jazzy set to medium, using the dirty side of my ccdc, and a 616.

Man, I've seen the YYYs quite a few times and I'm always perplexed. I've come to the simple conclusion that Nick Zinner knows toan along with possessing the live looping skills to be a one man wrecking ball on guitar.

I know that doesn't help you any but I had to pop in and say it...

EDIT: Is your avatar your naked RAT on Officer B's stump? So much innuendo going on with that question....

Yeah, I'm not sure if I have much to add beside what's already been said, but that whole album is just beyond amazing. :thumb:

I is confused. You mean the intro on Y Control? I always thought that was just staccato picking + dirt + delay?

But goddamn that shit's my jam.

I couldn't find the article I was thinking of with pics of his room and all but it's a Zoom Rhythmtrack RT-123...

ZOOM RHYTHMTRAK RT-123

This is my favorite cheap drum machine. You can program in your own patterns with not only the many different drum sounds, but also the bass and keyboard sounds. Lots of Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs feature a keyboard sound from this, like “Rich” and “Maps.” I like running the RT-123 through either a distortion pedal or a cheap amp for a more fucked-up sound. Everyone thinks it’s a guitar. Ha ha.

It's not just overdubbing on a loop pedal? Where does the Zoom come into it?
great songs btw

Yeah, I knew it was the drum machine, but I was just wondering what someone might do to achieve that with a guitar and various effects. I like how the notes kinda cross over each other and create a phaser-like sound just for a second. Otherwise... yeah, shitty distortion with some sort of delay and ring modulation would probably do it.

Still haven't had a chance to try anything yet, but I'll get back on it soon.

The Zoom has keyboard sounds and he just has them on a Boss Looper live... I'm sure CBA can get the base sounds pretty easily, ring mod is probably not needed... Compressor, cheap delay and cheap distortion not fuzz (which is blasphemous here but oh well)...
