gritty od with an attitude or two!

Post by synthezatory »

Sorry if it's been discussed before, still not satisfied with the google finds. Bored with regular od pedals, especially ones that tgp would always talk about (fill in the blank). Looking for something different, preferably low-med gainers, hi gain is welcomed if they great at lower gain settings. Care to chime in and spill some list and elaborate? so far mine's are

-Barbershop od : i like the sag knob, can be used for that drained battery sound. Nice gritty drive sound.
fave reference : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJgfe3_XRx4

-Fuck/mini od : sounded different from all other od's out there, good eq and dirt. Don't care much for 'broken speaker sound' feature though.
fave reference : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGTxRvhf ... re=g-all-u

-Interstellar overdriver : by the look itself, it's a good simple looking od. Has that grit that I'm looking for but too much mixed reviews
fave reference : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEgwwsv3L9E

-Rx overdriver : very nice od with that colorsound characters, can be fuzzy at higher gain setting which is good. Very responsive eq. The following youtube's link sounds sick!
fave reference : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llnVWb_wlpE

-Field Effects Manifold Drive : don't know much about this one, but I love what I heard on some videos
fave reference : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmyoZdgHVJQ

Feel free to support/approve/diss on that list. Now have a go!

PS: my setup is fender jaguar through ac15, which is too bad that some of the videos above are on humbuckers as for my reference

Mini Fuck kills! I like it better than the original but actually kinda miss the broken speaker stomp. The bias knob covers a wide array of sounds tho, gets real starved sounding or incredibly full. Tons of gain on tap if needed, great EQ, natural, and boost anything with ease and little noise.

BAT Black Forest is cool, clean boost to heavy fuzz, kinda splatty at some mid-gain settings. Powerful EQ.

BAT Super Bass and/or Super Lead Revelation is huge sounding, no EQ tho voiced perfectly IMO.

Dr. Scientist Elements will do ANYTHING lo to med to high gain and sound super doing it. Contains a Cleanness circuit too (one of the most underrated boosts ever which =3 band EQ, gain, and volume. Mix knob with exp control is very useful as well.

EQD Monarch is pretty badass too, unique OD with wide gain range, Orange-ish of course.

EDIT: Can't comment on the list too much. Beyond the Fuck, the IOS is only other I've owned and I didn't care for it really...

Ss/Bs mini is defiantly a good choice. I was looking for a gritty, brittle, low gain od. Mini defiantly gives me that. Love the lo-fi ness I can get with the bias knob turned ccw

A bit pricey, but the Swell G-Tod can get some killer vintage grit. I know the B-Drive is the best OD I've played on bass. Hands down.

I think I'd take the Mini over the Barbershop. I haven't played the Mini, but the drive tones out of the full F*ck have more personality than the Barbershop in my opinion. More grit. The Barbershop is pretty gorgeous sounding, but much more of a transparent thing (which isn't exactly my thing.)

Basically, ^that. Fuck has more gain, and honestly, can do the transparent thing better too, if that's what you're into.

using the mix control with expression pedal, does the volume level match for the clean and overdrive?

and any other pedals that have that feature of clean/dirty mix with a pedal?

i might have to get one of those just for that feature

I just dial the mix out completely with expression, leaving only the dry tone, then bring it back to max for the heaviez. Levels are fine as long as you tailor the Elements output to your clean signal output, works like a charm. :thumb:
