i got a Peavey Patriot a few weeks ago for less than two hundred bucks, and it has quickly become my #1 gigging guitar. solid as a rock. plays great. the super-ferrite pickups sound awesome. those old Peaveys are killer & i think the secret is pretty much out, so buy low while it's still possible.

Fucking Duo Sonics man. At first I was a little hesitant to want to play the one I got, but its SO GUD. I think the Squier versions aren't that expensive, and it looks like you can even get 60's Duo Sonic bodies for under $200 to put one together. Totally worth it. Beyond Tele sparkle

If you're talking about Warren Ellis, I dunno if it is a Duo-Sonic; I think it's an Eastwood Tenor Guitar?

Similar body shape, I guess, but I feel like it's a whole different beast due to tenor having 4 strings and the single pickup.

It's like a big mandocaster, but with a proper pickup to do dem distrortz.
See around 7 minutes into this video:

Definitely not in the realm of cheap though (MSRP $649)
But back on the subject of cheap guitars. How about those Tele kits you can get so cheap? My brother wants to get into building custom guitars, and so to help him get some experience with finishing guitars and doing the soldering, fit and finish, etc, I was going to commission him to build me one of the GuitarFetish Teles with natural finishes, so that I have something to keep by my desk at work. Anyone have any experience with these?

If it's not up to par on quality, I figure my brother can let me know and we can make the executive decision to replace bits as necessary / have him custom make some stuff. I've also debated throwing an Alpine Woodworks Telemaster body into the mix and selling the Tele body immediately. Thoughts?

Never had experience with that kit, but seems like an OK price and plan to replace stuff as needed. I DO recommend alpine_oregon for bodies though, he's got SUPER nice original and unusual body routes on Ebay for like $80 starting

Just realized he's got a Padouk + Purpleheart thinline Telemaster on alpine_oregon's ebay store and I MUST HAZ. I've always wanted a raw Padouk guitar; for a long time I was secretly budgeting for a chambered Padouk strat body for my craptacular Strat but never pulled the trigger because Warmoth costs a ton of $$$.
No one else bid on that Padouk thinline Telemaster, K? I need that.

Re: your favorite cheap guitars/basses
I guess I've been confusing the Duo-Sonic for the Tenor the few times I've seen it. Never saw them live. Sorry about the confusion.

Re: your favorite cheap guitars/basses
I may want to get a maple neck instead of the GuitarFetish rosewood neck then. In which case I might be better off buying all the parts off the 'bay or Warmoth
