What do I need?

Post by Helter »

I know this question has been asked a million times but I feel like it's something you DIYers like talking about so I thought id ask. Ok so the need for a clean boost has presented itself and I think they are super easy to build (I think!). I know nothing of soldering and even less about electronics. Should I just order that BYOC starter kit thing (y'know, includes everything including the little solder station thing-ma-bob) or should I just buy the BYOC clean boost kit and buy all the solder stuff somewhere else if the BYOC is shitty or something. Unless that stuff just costs less than I think because the BYOC starter thing is so cheap it worries me. Thanks dudes :thumb:

If the BYOC kit seems reasonable do it most definitely. Everything you need and nothing you don't. That way you can figure out whether or not you wanna do more. Soldering is something that you can figure out shortly and as long as you follow the instructions it should be success.

You could always start adding and changing components once you have it together if you hate it!

OH NO haha I dont mean hate the boost ( I didn't know it was possible to hate a clean boost  ) I mean hate building the pedals themselves. I think i'll like it as I like building things out of wood haha which I realize is a totally different beast but I mean I think patience is what makes people frustrated with pedals. Not that I'm an expert.

Patience, and things not working the first time are the things that get me frustrated when I build usually. But you've just got to push through, and trouble shoot, and it USUALLY ends up being something totally stupid.

i think ordering a kit is wise. i didn't order any kit and found myself leaving out dumb things that i needed and it delayed me in actually building anything because i had to wait for something to come in the mail/make extra trips to radioshack. that byoc kit is awesome and the solder station is suposed to be the best one for the money.

Research, dude. You can build a decent boost pedal for around $20.00
There are plenty of layouts and build guides available. You can even get an etched PCB pretty cheap.
