Being a not very big Obama fan, I have to say I'm gonna lose all hope for humanity if Romney wins.

Same.

I honestly don't think things will get much worse or better regardless of who gets elected.

They will get worse if Romney is elected, and I will give you one reason: The Supreme Court.

I REALLY don't want Romney to get the chance to nominate someone. Obama's nominees were pretty rational individuals. Romney is a big business crony and I wouldn't want him tainting the country for decades to come.

If Obama's elected, at the very least the Republicans won't get the chance to fuck this country in the ass again.

I really don't get why everyone is always so against "big business". Generally whenever I hear someone say "big business" or "big corporations" I assume they have no idea what they're talking about.

"Big business" has improved our lives in almost every way imaginable.

Right now we're using a service provided by big corporations, to talk to eachother - mostly about equipment made with parts produced by big corporations - using devices made by other big corporations, that are made from parts produced by other big corporations, sitting in offices or houses or whatever, all either built by big corporations, or at the least built with materials produced by big corporations, that were only able to get to where they needed to be used because of other big corporations................ do I really need to keep going? And the reason that these things are normal and not luxuries is all because of big corporations in general.

Maybe you'd all like to live on farms and grow your own food, and wash your clothes in a river, and get your hand written mail delivered by horse. I think I'm totally fine with living in a city, with machines that wash my clothes for me, and getting like a hundred dollars worth of books delivered to me by Amazon in 2 days that only cost me like $8. And while we're at it, if you're so against big businesses feel free to go live until you're 30, but I'll stick with my 70 or 80 year plus life expectancy thank you.

Yeah, keep going. We could get into a big debate about this.

This is only normal because you've normalized it. This is totally a luxury. Your life would be no worse off without this.

Life with big corporations is a balance of who's getting taken advantage of. You take a little advantage of them. They take a little advantage of you. You just need to make sure you're the one taking more advantage.

If you think it would be no worse off then go live in a hut somewhere eating food that has a good chance of carrying harmful bacteria or parasites because you have neither proper sanitation nor preservation and storage. Let me know how it is.

And as for being taken advantage of. All you have to do to have the material things you want is work. Work is something I already like doing regardless. So I have to do something I like doing, to get things I like having. This seems like a win win to me.

Now, I'll be going in my car to have food whose style comes from a country nowhere near here. I suppose you'll be like off in the woods with a sharpened stick or a rock or something looking for something to eat.

How old is the oldest large corporation?

How long have people walked the Earth before the advent of large corporations?

Yeah, public health/sanitation/food storage is better than it used to be, but humans make their own problems.

Someone has been watching way too much South Park.

Sure, business has improved our lives, but that doesn't mean I want them to be able to buy our government. Romney doesn't represent a car company, or a computer company, or anything like that. He represents those who get rich by manipulating the flow of money. And history has shown that while the economy doesn't work without those kinds of people, it's better to keep a tight lid on them.

The idea that big business has improved every facet of our lives is relatively tenuous. I would hazard a guess that people, on the whole, are not any happier than they were 20, 200, or 2,000 years ago. I usually key in to that as the primary value for "improving society."

On the other hand, life is certainly better for someone born with a crippling illness/disability. The mentally ill are treated better, and in several other aspects society has indeed become more humane.

So, it's a wash.

Yeah, public health/sanitation/food storage is better than it used to be, but humans make their own problems.

Nearly 1500 years old.

Roughly between perhaps 100,000 and 200,000 years. I'd refer you to just about any debate with Christopher Hitchens. He gives a much more eloquent accounting of how people lived for most of that time.

As for humans making their own problems, statistically just about everyone in the entire world is better off than they were at almost any point in our collective past. We are more aware of the shit people live in now - thanks to corporations - but even the worst off in most of the world has a better life - or chance at life - now than ever before. Even with the million ways we have invented to kill eachother, by percentage fewer people are killed now than just about EVER before. Even taking the most deaths in the fewest years during the last century, by percentage of world population it pales in comparison to the deaths by percentage in much of our past.

Ok. Now I'm really leaving and going to lunch. Later. Still love you all.
