W&C Tall Font Russian vs. BATW Pharoah Fuzz

Post by SwanFaces »

I bought a BATW Pharoah about a month ago, and I really like the tones, but it's very noisy. At times it seems to have almost too much low end for my taste. I'm playing into a clean AC30. What are your experiences with the Tall Font Russian in terms of noise? There aren't many demos of it online. Do you think the two sound too similar to justify one over the other? The search continues

So there you have it,
Wall Stickers is the most brutal, abrasive, and adorable fuzz to ever stalk this barren hellscape.
Thank you dsgd!

But for real,
I use my Pharoah as a cleanish dark boost. Any fuzz before it would sound HUGE!!!
If its already to bottom heavy for you, you may wanna look into an IC based muff.

I recently got a Pharaoh as well. Has a bit of noise, but so have most muffs I've played. Sounds more open and defined than my Musket. It sounds huge but not as dense as the Musket. I doubt that the Pharaoh will totally replace the Musket, but the Musket will probably not be on my board that much. You could probably find a reason to have both pedals, but the only way to know for sure is to pick up one of the tall fonts and see :animal:

My experience mirrors t-rey's pretty much. As for noise, I don't hear much with my Pharaoh....

And def experiment with stacking the Pharaoh. It takes most any fuzz/dirt/boost exceptionally well, retaining it's basic character while allowing you to fill in new frequencies. This generally results in a massively awesome sound!

The Badascan is another option when Mark releases it shortly, a sorta high gain LSTR/Pharaoh circuit mashup that's not as bass heavy as the Pharaoh. It's badass.

My TFR was very low-noise. Maybe the lowest noise I'd ever heard in a muff. Not nearly as versatile as the Pharaoh, but I'd take the TFR over the Pharaoh any day. YMMV.

Also, muffs into AC30s can be tricky.

also my experience with the pharaoh was too much low end muffledness and some people want that but I do not. I never had the noise issue with the pharaoh maybe it is your power supply! you can always hasss moarrr fuzzzz. But if you aren't jiving with the fuzz, sell it and find something else!

Is it just me or are all the comments of "too much low end" just make me want one more?

If your attempting to get get heavy fuzz tones out of an EL84 tube power amp (like your AC30) your going to be repeatedly let down time and time again regardless of what pedal it is. EL84's do not like having low end thrust in to them by pedals, I went through this with my Verellen Mod Jet City 20 watt and our rythmn guitarists AC15. Any muff type variant is gonna be a struggle to get it to sound right.

As far as the noise issue can you explain what kind of noise it is? Is it a 60hz hum? Is it crackling and popping? Or is it a tone noise that you hear and don't like?

EL84s can get bass but you just need the right kind of amp for it. Pharaoh has little low end cut so if your trying play it like its the Elements its never going to work. The best part about the Pharaoh is the EQ, lack of mid range cut, and overall usefullness with every other known pedal

I was using a One Spot, but I just bought a Voodoo Labs power supply and most of the noise is gone! I think some of it has to do with my Jazzmaster, which has always been kind of noisy. I've just been through so many fuzzes with the AC30. I know Voxs are hard to get fuzz right with, but man...

Yeah sometimes daisy chaining with the onespot get make for some or a lot of unwanted noise, hiss, etc. I haven't tried a jazzmaster but heard that can be quite finicky with amps and noise problems. It is good to hear things are working out for you!

On a side note, some people like their guitar toaaan to be low-endy and bassssy but I leave that ground for the bassist and go for a more crunchy, middy, nasally, harsh tooaan on guitar. The pharaoh was too smooth, not nasty enough for my liking but geeee it did interactly beautifully with other pedals if you like basssssy tooooanz.
