US telephones have a letter code printed on the telephone buttons:

1
2 = ABC
3 = DEF
4 = GHI
5 = JKL
6 = MNO
7 = PQRS
8 = TUV
9 = WXYZ
0

in the early days of phones in the US it was thought that a 7-digit local number was too difficult for people to remember, so the telephone exchanges denoted by the first two digits were given word-names. an example of this is the Glenn Miller jazz tune "Pennsylvania 6-5000," which would dial as 736-5000. starting in the 70s, after the exchange codes were no longer used, US businesses began using the letters on the phone dial/buttons to spell words (they can request specific numbers). if the word is longer than the seven-digit limit the phone doesn't recognize the extra digits.
