Elixirs or Boomers? Or other coated strings?

Post by mathias »

Quite awhile ago, I put some coated strings on my SG, but I can't remember which. And those strings lasted a long time and didn't have the coated string issue of getting little 'divots' or rough spots where each fret was -- plus the usual coated string attributes: they weren't corroding, they stayed in tune pretty well, etc.

Problem is, I can't remember what brand they were, but I've got a feeling they were 11's, and I'm keen to put a set of 12's on my SG.

So let's duke it out: what should I use? What worked best for you? Curious to learn from all of our collective experience.

I've got some GHS Boomer 11's on one of mine that sound pretty great. They just sound B I G . I haven't logged a ton of hours on that guitar, so I don't have the super long view there, but they do sound and feel really meaty.

Plus, Elwood put those on there, and he seems to know what he's doing.  :p :thumb:

I use to use only Boomers, plus I love the Michigan support, but lately I have solely been using DR pure blues. I have been wanting to throw boomers back on my LP though.

i've never used the coated Boomers, but have gotten to kind of like the uncoated ones because they're a middle ground between Ernie Balls which i used for years but which can be over-toppy/thin in the mids and the typical nickle-plated sound which is dull to me. they're also clearer without that awful uber-hi-fi sound of D'Addarios.

I hate my d'addarios, but the shop only has d'addario 12s. No other brands. I should just buck up and buy this shit in bulk online.

D'Addarios suck. I don't love Ernie Balls but I've found them much more consistent, easy-to-find in good gauge spreads for guitar and inexpensive.
I had coated Elixirs on my bass for a bit, they were pretty awesome but steep. I love DR but have never tried the coated version...I never could get used to the feel or the price tag of coated strings, and when the coating starts to flake off you get string dandruff all over your axe.
Bulk is the way to go, and in the past I have worked deals with my local shop to get a big price break, same as I would've paid online...
Special low-frequency version.

We (the few guitar players I knew in middle school / highschool) used to swear by Ernie Ball Super Slinkys, but I've since moved on. And so I attribute the Ernie Balls (probably due to the thinness of the Super Slinkys) with a lot of bad string things -- going out of tune, getting kinks, breaking easily. Never went back to Ernie Balls. :idk:

Don't like ernie balls much myself, got them a few times and they always seemed to break easily. I've been using D'Addarios for ages and I like them, but I figured I'd try some elixirs and just ordered a set of 12s. Pretty intrigued, but I feel ridiculous about spending so much on one set of strings!

Don't like coated strings.
I use DR Pure Blues or Ernieball.

I was an Elixer whore for years. Now I've got Ernie Ball Cobalt's on both my electrics. they sound good, last long, and they're cheaper than elixers.

Just put some Elixirs on my jag, they sound niiiice tuned to D standard. It's cool having a wound G too, they feel nice so far. If they stay good for longer than normal strings I'll keep buying them (but not very often), because so far I like them.
