Frank Zappa used one to great extent. ZVEX makes a clone of this, the Seek WAhs/Ooh Wahs.
2 modes, a touchy filter, and a random arpeggiator.
(close cousin is the Maestro FSH-1)



Colorsound Ring Modulator
A Ring Mod in a wah-type case with two modes, changed by that knob poking through the top.

Simple tremolo, but are extremely rare. Some guy apparently found a hundred or so of them in a storage room quite a while back.

"What can I say! ..Sebastian’s tribute to post-modernism, affectionately known as the "Pointy Bird" , is one helluva auto filter for guitar.(and many other applications) Looking suspiciously like something smuggled out of deepest Russia, it’s unique appearance belies the processing power available within this pedal. Containing two interactive dynamic filters, it’s probably best left to the designer to explain "The DDF-100 is comprised of two Twin-T dynamic filters driven by a common control voltage derived from the input signal .In other words, these filters rely on the dynamics (loudness) of the input signal to specify their "peak" frequency. Additionally within the dynamic range of the incoming signal, the filter range is adjustable via the two filter controls on the side. The point at which these two filters begin to activate is specified by the sensitivity control at top. The distortion control allows the user to fade in some odd harmonic distortion to further bring out the resonances that lie deep within the program. Varying the release control adjusts the rate at which the filter recovers from being triggered - from fast to slow." The DDF-100 is not only a great processing tool ,but an excellent weapon in the fight against the drunken punter! This is so sharp in every way it could kill!"

Several have been taken apart over the years and schematics made. Most aren’t correct, but a couple are close.

X-ray won’t show writing, maybe components if you’re lucky.

The clipping is on the output side, and is an rc circuit to add even order harmonics.

I believe people have been melting them down to figure out what it inside. I don't think x-ray would do it, because you wouldn't be able to discern exactly what you were looking at.

There are chemicals to break it down and heat is one method used and many other ways of fighting the goop, X-Ray is one way that has been done and the result
