Every time Sigur Ros is mentioned, someone usually goes out and says that they're pretentious or something to that effect. I think that Svefn-g-englar is an awesome song, no matter how overplayed it may be.
Then again in the semi post-rock strain, you might like The Evpatoria Report, Ef, The Mercury Program, and perhaps Del Rey. In a different line of thought, Slint and Sofa are good bands to check out.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?
Current ILF Love: OHNOHO CHK CHK BOOM, Mellowtone Melx Fuzz 2, EQD Dream Crusher, Devi Ever ID, Dr. Scientist Proto-Miniberator - new vids eventually
Ef is fantastic. Gregor Samsa is another post-rock group that has heavy elements of gaze with vocals. Their female vocalist, Nikki King, has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. Seriously.
I can't recommend them enough. Mezcal Head and especially Raise.
And Ride. Try to find the first two Ride EPs and their full length, Nowhere. Check out the band Seefeel. They sound a lot like Fripp and Eno, combined with a bit of Slowdive and Orbital.
Ah, also good bands... I've never heard of Seefeel... I'll look them up.

I concur. By the way, the first 2 Ride EPs were compiled into a mini-album called "Smile", which should be somewhat easier to find. I'd also recommend Ride's second album "Going Blank Again". At least get hold of the tracks "Leave Them All Behind" "Cool Your Boots" and "OX4"
And the one-off reunion jam-type-thing from 2001, "Coming Up For Air" was pretty cool as well, get that if you can find it for download somewhere.
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.
A lot of the other bands mentioned earlier in this thread are a lot harder edged than I recall from Slowdive.
The closest thing I've heard to Slowdive in recent times is Malory (and I mean DNA testing is likely required). Look up the album Not Here Not Now from 2006.
Musically cleaner, but still very moody and dreamy, I'd say Air Formation's Daylight Storms from '06. The Daysleepers early EPs have a bit more bass punch with lots of Cure-esque chorused guitar hooks threading across a lush shoegaze landscape and the obligatory buried vocals (check out Stars of Fire). Thrushes' Sun Come Undone gets a lot of rave reviews, but that's more along the MBV style. Faster paced; more dynamic.
