Ive never owned any equipment until recently, just borrowed stuff or shared gear at rehearsal spaces. Recently acquired a cheap Laney Linebacker 100 w Reverb head and all I'm missing now is a cab to pair it with. Is there anything that would be good for stoner doom metal (Ocean Chief, Electric Wizard, Acid King sound wise) at around $400, and what dimensions (speakers) are we talking about in the first place? I'm on a really tight budget...
Peavey Windsor 4x12. Or really any Peavey 4x12. Just make sure the ohm rating of the cab along with the wattage are sufficient for the Laney, but as far as construction and reliability for the price, you really can't go wrong with Peavey. If you're playing heavy stuff, the Windsor cab has 12's that are a tad on the dark side which would work perfectly for what you describe. I found mine used for around $100!
Great, thanks for the fast reply! Should the ohm be the same on the head and cab or lower on the cab than on the head? I'm all green bit eager to learn.
Since it is a solid state amp, it is not as essential to have the ohm rating match exactly. What ohm ratings does the head have? For solid state gear, you always want to go to a higher number if you can't get an exact match. For example, if your head had an 8 ohm output, you could use 8 ohms or 16 ohms, but not 4. For tubes, it HAS to be an exact match
I second the peavey cab idea, they are usually readily available for cheap on craigslist. If you can find one with sheffield speakers (it will be labeled sheffield equipped) I love those cabs.
