The "I will reclaim this guitar!" thread.

Post by FuzzHugger »

Share your shitty story, where you lost / had stolen / sold a real gem.

In 2002, I bought a gorgeous 1996 MIJ 50th Anniversary Telecaster for $475ish.

Juuuuust like this one:
ImageImage

Great condition, played perfectly...heart-breakingly beautiful in that perfect ugly Fender way. The only guitar with gold hardware I ever liked.

Sold it overseas, bad deal, got lost in the mail...FedEx offered to ship it back to me for $450, $550 or something...didn't take em up on it.

Still, when I think about it, I feel sick.

I WILL reclaim this guitar. Obviously, a different one. But some day, I will find one. It won't be sub-$500 like in 2002, but I'll find it, the stars will align, and I'll somehow have the money for it. MARK MY WORDS!!!!!!!   :grumpy:

My first Maton BB1200 that I saved over two years to buy was stolen this year. I filled in on guitar with a friend's band one fine evening and afterward, a local junkie crackhead yanked it right off the stage and ran out the door. I was standing right outside when he came flying out so we gave chase but he hopped a fence and threw my guitar over in the process. I watched it shatter in front of my eyes, just devastating.

In the end, my homeowner's covered it after my insurance guy worked some absolute magic. While I haven't been able to technically "reclaim" it (though I do have some of the hardware and pickups that weren't destroyed), I at least had the chance to replace it. :thumb:

Then I started experimenting with some hammered finishes on that extra hardware so in the end, turned out cooler than my original.

I lent my rig to a friend to record a demo.
1978 Aria SB700, Trace Elliot GP11 amp w/ 8x10 loaded with Fanes, flight cased.
The studio got broken into overnight and they took everything in the building.
That was the end of my bass rig.

I had a great Gibson SG I painted in British Racing Green with two racing stripes. I sold it and now it's in China.

Geeez that would be tough to get over!!

I used to have an Ibanez Universe that I really loved... lent it to a pal around 1999, haven't talked to him in over 10 years. My Trey Azagthoth impression is nothing without that guitar.

I don't have a photo because my contribution to this thread is more like the one that got away.

Went guitar shopping with a friend, wasn't even looking for myself. Saw an early '70s Fender Telecaster Custom hanging in a shop. Black w/ rosewood board. Played it. Light as fuck. Must've weighted only a little over 7 lbs. Sounded great unplugged and all fired up as well. I wanted it. Didn't have any money. Had a BC Rich ST-III. Went home, got it, brought it back. They didn't wanna take it in trade. Went to another shop to sell it. Came back the next day. Telecaster was gone. That was before I knew I could ask them to hold it for me (or about lay-a-way). Last time that's gonna happen. End of story.

I still think about that guitar. Maybe one day I'll get something remotely like it?

I'm almost there with my G&L. Traded it for two Fender PA's and $100. I miss it sometimes. But I'm content with what I have now. But, then I look at this picture I took of it right after the trade.

The best part was me, sitting in the hallway of a hotel (this was at the Ft. Worth Guitar Convention), frantically trying to clean the blood off of it with my shirt and spit. I had forgotten how much of me was on that bass. It was my 18th birthday gift to myself, and I played it constantly. The finish was almost entirely worn off on the bottom of the neck, and there was a huge gash in the wood above the pickup because that's where my thumb would rest (I guess my nail would dig in a bit?). I can't even imagine how many times I had to change the strings on that bass from drenching the thing in sweat. Once, a set pretty much went totally dead after one show in the middle of July. I'm glad the guy didn't make me take the ILF sticker off of it.

Yeah, nice seeing the ILF sticker while it's just sitting there in stock. Straight representing. I hate looking at pics of some of the shit I've let go honestly.
