Not exactly a convert, had an early 4 string Super J that I sold for a number of reasons, one being that it was not the colour I asked for. I ordered Burgundy Mist and the bass was Purple. The Super J was the first high end bass I ever ordered. The colour was pretty cool, but when you order something and then wait months for it you expect it to be right. Wasn't really Sheldon's fault as much as it was my dealer disappearing on me. I ended up cutting my losses and moved it on. Saw Sheldon at NAMM this year and introduced myself to him as the "guy who ordered the first Burgundy Mist Super J". He apologized to me and said if I can ever help you out with something let me know. Cool guy in my book!

For me the difficulty lies with switching between four and five strings rather than fanned and regular frets.

I actually played a very nice 5 string for over a year and a half and sold it after I got my Big Al as it was screwing with me in band practice.

Do the pickups overlap on the third string?

My guess is that its only on the top shell like it would be on an A string for a 4 string Pbass and that it's arranged the way it is for a more consistent look and cost savings (only making one size shell and not two per pickup)

Well I picked it out, so at least it was done correctly. I actually liked that combo and so did the guys at the shop who were skeptical when I spec'd it out.
