Cheap & small pedalboards with gig bags or cases?

Post by mathias »

Hey folks,

Looking for a small pedalboard to take to/from work with effects on it, so that I can bring in different effects to my office to keep me occupied. (Office setup currently consists of my 60's SG-clone and a Orange Microcrush, but will soon be a Tele that my brother is going to build me, and one of my hybrid practice amps..)

So I would like to be able to take 5-6 pedals of Boss-size at a time, and I would like a gig bag or case (although not to heavy duty of a case) to be able to carry it with my on the bus or when I bike into work or whatever. I'll be using a onespot so it doesn't have to fit a Voodoo Labs PP or anything.

Currently looking at Rondo's Medium case, which seems really reasonable at $35 with a hard cover: http://www.rondomusic.com/pdc410dmsbk.html

The only problem I can see is that it is flat rather than angled.

Is there anything else I should be looking at? The Pedaltrain Mini is pretty cool, but it's also not angled (not that I need the space underneath for a pedal power, and can't have a second row on there, but still.) and the other problem with the Pedaltrain Mini is that it costs about twice as much. Maybe worth it to save just a little bit longer and get the Pedaltrain over the Rondo thing?

I'd go with the Pedaltrain Mini. I've got two of them, they're awesome and the bag is pretty nice too. It's got decent padding
and a nice sized storage pocket and comes with a shoulder strap too.

If you'd like it to be angled you can always put taller rubber feet on the back and shorter ones on the front. :idk:

I'd go for the pedaltrain nano. I've been able to fit six on it before. It's a bit of a trick, top mounted jacks help, and you have to make sure you're using cables with pancake ends, but it works and it's awesome.

Here's my pedalboard circa last fall, it has five, but I've fit six on it with no trouble:

If you're looking for more room, though, that rondo looks pretty cool.

If I brought a bunch of pedals and guitars and stuff to work they would punch me in the face. And then fire me. I take the pedaltrain zero to work. Doesn't fit any pedals, which allows me to keep my job haha.

I had the larger Rondo/CNB pedal case and they are pretty flimsy (there is a reason they are so cheap), so I sold it and built my own. For about $25 is materials, I have a pretty versatile board. The empty spot with velcro in the top middle spot is where my DC brick used to live before it crapped out. The dimensions are 25" W x 11" x 6" H (to the top of the knobs on the Milkbox) and I can fit about 12 pedals total. If you cut the width to 14" you could get 6 pedals on one easily with the power supply on the bottom. I plan on getting a Moog Little Phatty soft case for $54 and it should fit my board and bass head (Aguilar TH500) in the side pocket.

i was looking at those rondos awhile back. at first i got a warwick rockcase for cheap off ebay. quality was pretty low.

i ended up making my own case w/ a sweet leather briefcase i got at the amvets, a piece of wood from home depot and some sea foam green foam. it was a fun project. and i still use it today...makes me feel like kramer in that one seinfeld episode

We have an acoustic guitar at work that someone brought in, and it's nice to noodle on it during breaks or when you're thinking through a particularly hard-to-solve problem. (My job involves a lot of thinking and creation.) I wouldn't be playing guitar all day, and I have to be mindful of not disturbing others. That said, it'll be fun to bring in different pedals and show people how they work. The other folks at work (most of them not guitar players) have had me explain fuzz pedals and analog audio electronics a couple times to them before.

Edit: I've built pedalboards in the past, but what I really need here is the gig bag or case so that I can transport it back and forth all the time and not worry. I don't drive a car so it has to come with me on the bus or strapped to my backpack when I bike in.

Your job sounds awesome dude! And yeah, PT nanno. Their gig bags, even the soft ones, are great.

Didn't read the thread after op but a really cheap solution could be a wide plank and a gym bag. Buddies do that all the time.

Gonna have to draw some inspiration from the Build the best board you can for under $500! GO! thread http://www.ilovefuzz.com/viewtopic.php?f=149&t=28752 for some of the more permanent members of this board. :thumb:

I think I'm gonna go with a used Pedaltrain Nano with a gig bag, if I can find one. I wanna get it used because I'm going to try to spray paint it and put some white velcro I got down..
