Shoegazey Recommendations

Post by Seizurema »

I love Slowdive's Just for a Day. Primal makes me orgasm.

I don't like Souvlaki, and I think Loveless is decent at best.

Recommend me some shoegaze that I would enjoy in that vein (straying into post-y territory is ok if necessary). I guess more epic and less poppy? Thankee. :thumb:

(Dons flame-retardant suit for Loveless comment)

I've said it on another thread, but I don't really think that highly of Loveless. I think it's a very good album, but I just don't get that excited about it.

The two bands I would recommend based on what you are looking for, are Mogwai and Red Sparowes. They are less "shoegaze" and more "epic, post-rock", but certainly draw influences from the shoegaze scene, particularly MBV. There are plenty of shoegaze-influenced bands in the metal world as well - Jesu (the later stuff in particular), Isis, Nadja - they all have strong similarities to shoegaze, and frequently name-check those bands.

I second the Mogwai recommendation, and in terms of post-rock type stuff, Explosions in the Sky would be in a similar ball-park. And maybe Sigur Ros, but I find them to be horribly overrated.
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.

Me too. :idk:

Nadja stuff is pretty good.I would also recommend the first Bowery Electric record, not really a shoegaze :whateva: , but give it a try.

Yeah, I do enjoy Red Sparowes/Mogwai/Godspeed/Jesu/EitS and mos things in that vein.

I was just wondering if there was anything I was missing that fell under the "shoegaze" umbrella. :idk:

EDIT - Slow Thrills was pretty sweet. :thumb:

i agree w/ the "Loveless" assessment. i haven't heard all of Souvlaki but the one song that i have heard i think is really really awesome. really perfect...

i am more into Dream Pop than Shoegaze though. :stitch:

35007 (Loose) is pretty good. Not sure if it qualifies as Shoegaze though.

Sigur Ros overrated? :wha?:

This thread holds the answers you're searching for: viewtopic.php?f=150&t=4737

My recommendations are

Asobi Seksu - Citrus, Hush
Astrobrite - Super Crush
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - s/t
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Methodrone
Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place (electro shoegaze)
M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts
The Lilys - In The Presence of Nothing
Air Formation - Daylight Storms
Fleeting Joys - Despondent Transponder
Ringo Deathstarr - s/t

Those are ones that usually aren't mentioned that I like, so there you go.

Yeah, I said it. I just don't like them. I think it might have something to do with the BBC using "Hoppipolla" in trailers A BLOODY LOT.

The albums I left in the quote, I can vouch for them being good. Fleeting Joys' second album "Occult Radiance" is rather good as well, actually.

I can't get into Fleeting Joys...they just remind me Loveless era MBV but not as well produced.

i can understand that. It's a pretty awesome take on the sound though. I'd say In The Presence Of Nothing by the Lilys is the only thing to ever be 95% on to what loveless is. It's an awesome record. And Ringo Deathstarr has Loveless/You Made Me Realise sound mixed real nice. i diggggggg.

Have you checked out Pygmalion? It's an awesome record. It's really fucking out there. It sounds like i took a lot of opiates.

And not for the one about Souvlaki!???

haha... oh well...

I don't really have many recommendations...

I basically keep it locked on late 80's/early 90's bands... Slowdive, MBV, Cocteau Twins, Chapterhouse, J&M Chain, Swervedriver, et al...

I know those aren't all necessarily "SHOEGAZE", but they all share some common elements.

SWEEERRRVVVEEEEDRRRIVVVERRRR

I can't recommend them enough. Mezcal Head and especially Raise.

And Ride. Try to find the first two Ride EPs and their full length, Nowhere. Check out the band Seefeel. They sound a lot like Fripp and Eno, combined with a bit of Slowdive and Orbital.
