ROCKS HARD AND UGLY. THIS THING IS KILLER.

i've neglected the original muff for many years, (had a green russian in the 90's and hardly played it. i was a death metal fool with a charvel2 and marshall 800... don't hate; i was young and not yet muff ready. i traded it for a boss tuner. yep, still got; a TU12. have i put you to sleep yet?).
anyhoo...
so i got a BAT LSTR and PHARAOH and a GGG muff and lovelovelove them... :snax: :snax: :snax:    :!!!: :!!!: :!!!:
...but i got a NYC MUFF from monkeyboy in the mail today, (excellent trader btw), and i gotta say that the neck pickup on my sg standard has never been happier. i'm going to have the sg tested for std's next week. that's a given. that muff is a promiscuos lil' box of stink.

so anyone else here got love for the nyc muff?

I think the NYC sounds about as good as most of the others.
It lacks a bit in the punch in the balls dept. but that's not everyone's thing.
Definitely the best pedal you can buy for $40.

yeah I traded away my NYC muff a while back and definitely miss it. It's a sweet sounding pedal and a solid value for a US product

Well....off to BST I guess to search for another one

I need another muff. It's about time.

Still kicking myself for trading my Green Russian ages ago. Can't remember what I got for it, sure hope it was something good.

I am currently using a larger black russian that skully modded up, it sounds flipping sweet but it can't handle an octave pedal in front of it quite like an NYC
anyone else experience this?

Never could jive with my NYC, sold it on here in my early days to fund my TGD I believe. This thread has made me wonder if I ever really applied it right, but it always sounded just TOO muffled to me (I know I know) Just felt like it got eaten up by any mix. Was my 3rd pedal though, and I did think I was bad ass in jr. high when I had it.

In your bedroom the NYC muff sounds great. Recording also is great with the muff just a pleasantly muffy, wooly warmish fuzz but in a live situation your sound becomes a ghost. The lack of mids makes your guitar disappear in the midst of the other mid-range instruments. I have heard of some mods to it to gain some mids back but that completely alters the character of the muff - mean and scooped. I picked one up for 40 bux and it is been sitting in my closest collecting dust. I did put some nice use on it but know it takes the back seat for my green Russian. The Russians do seem to be ballsier and even meaner. The NYC may have a bit more gain, gee it's been a while since I plugged that bad boy in!
Fuzz, reverb, delay.

So I'm not the only one who thinks the green russian is slightly overhyped??

I am not saying it is a bad pedal at all, and I think in the right hands they are a flipping beast, but for alot of things a NYC works just as well if not better

If you've got $220 to drop, there's one up in b/s/t right now! viewtopic.php?f=44&t=28567

I agree with you, but I have an exception for the live part. In the video below, my bandmate has a completely stock NYC muff on the right, I'm using a lower gain Devi Aenima. On stage I could always hear her guitar just fine, sometimes even more present than mine. She also owns a FH Absynth, Devi US and a ss/bs TAFM, she prefers the NYC Muff. It kicks a lot of butt with her Peavey classic 30 and Mustang. I mean I understand a lot of the times, the NYC muff doesn't really do this, but it's probably because it doesn't fit with their set up or their not willing to (or cannot) change other parts of their rig.

Also, a big muff in the background is never a bad thing to thicken things up without the listener realizing it. We recorded a song once with the Muff playing rhythm in the background of a more calm section, but when she switched to lead guitar the muff just stood out like a sore thumb, in a good way. I would love to play that role live.
