anyone "aged" a pickguard?

Post by space6oy »

aside from just scratching it up, mean more like an aged coloration. have a white pickguard & single coil cover that stick out like a bit of a sore thumb with an obviously old strat neck. imagine there's some way i could soak them in some weak dye or something like that, wondering if anyone's messed with the scenario & has tips...

You can spray it with some amber clearcoat, like they sell for necks. Some people dye them with coffee or oil or ink, but I don't know what they use specifically.

See this guide to relicing a pickguard: http://www.relicdeluxe.com/plastic_pickguard_knobs.asp

Totally missed this thread.

Yeah, soak it in some really strongly brewed black tea.

i've got some question since i think a cream pickguard would look way better than a white one...

for how long should i put it in the tea/coffee? and if i overdo it, how to revert it?

Good question.

I don't remember how long you're supposed to soak it for. It really depends on the type of plastic and how darkly stained you want it. Just keep checking it frequently (like every day) until it's the color you want. I think it might be really difficult to get it lighter if it gets too dark. You may be able to use a lightening agent, but I'm not really sure.
