well to be fair the bass VI is a jaguar, the T-40 is a non-lawsuit precision, and the EB-750 is literally just a florentine cut archtop so...

but yeah, i'd love to see more bass design shapes. i really like rickenbacker inspired shapes when i see them, like the stargazer. the stargazer 5 is probably the closest thing to my ideal bass, actually. too bad the schecter EQ is shit.

but the sad fact is that you're kinda hella pidgeonholed for playing anything but a p-bass, j-bass, or any standard bass shape. its like you don't get in bands with a spector, and you don't tour with one unless you're in a metal band, or MAYBE post-rock. maybe i'm just jaded, but in the wide variety of bands i'm aware of that make a living, very seldom does the bassist play a non-standard bass shape. and THATS a guitar trend i'd like to go away.

Might be where you are. I have seen as many non fenders as fender in terms of seeing bands play.. over my entire life.. I think I have done exactly one gig with a Pbass... most people don't even notice you are playing a bass let alone the brand.. and anyone that cares... is a asshole... If I was in your place with the bass you have I'd have a hard time not dragging that bass to every audition for every type of band there was in the area if just to piss all the assholes off.

I agree with this though. too many bassists don't think outside of the "what is in BP box, and too many builders cater to this. The problem as you guys bring up is no enough real choices... you have fender, modern.... and the few oddballs and not much inbetween.. like I like a lot of the builds of modern builders but HATE the shapes! and I really HATE soapbar pickups... then there is fender-things... I like P pickups a lot and sometimes Js but passive Js pickups are meh to me and I disslike most of the voicing you get in those onboard pres.. The odballs are cool though but ARE NEVER IN ANYTHNG OTHER THEN A 4! I know RIC did a few fives but... the things are over 3k used because they never made very many.. because most players don't want non-boring... or something :idk:

Honestly I hate a lot of modern basses. Maybe that's just my Fender/Rickenbacker fanboy coming out. I agree that there needs to be something other than two/three styles of bass though.

i feel like any modern style you have to have a ludicrously dexterous style. because modern inevitably means sculpted-with-figured-wood so you have ALL these varieties of shapes and woods but for some reason, theres this unspoken rule that you have to "really play bass" or have that implication that you can "really play bass" and guitar doesn't seem to have that stigma. or at least a correlation. i'm not saying its a concious thing at all, its just this massive coincidence to me.

like right now im looking at the bigger names in guitar and bass, and all my favorite models they have right now are riffs on a J or P bass. like Surveyor basses, ATK basses. just kinda the generic offset. but idk. all the modern shapes that are all rounded and junk, just kinda... i dunno. but i guess most other guitar shapes sorta boil down to offset, based-on-acoustic-shapes, or some mirrored-like geometric shape (V, firebird, explorer, some danelectros). which is why i really like the bongo, which is imo the first REALLY good and (hopefully) long lasting different bass shape.

just the sorta stereotypes for who buys what from the industry side and who they market what to, not a player end thing. and props for the dudes in Anamanaguchi for rockin RGs

Im not even really talking about shape Im talking about the instrument as a whole. my T-40 can sound a little like a P but its deff. not a knock off I can also cop some ricy tones out of it.

Hmmm yeah I see where you are going.. I don't know though.. to me the bongo is as much warped stingray as a ATK is.. it still looks like a MM bass.. and I like the shape ok [if you take that blasted pick guard off] but I really hate the neck shape.. actually out of their shapes I've always like the Albert Lee and was really happy when they did a bass version :idk:
