I love that article - was just thinking about it again the other day, in fact. One of my favorite lines (besides all of the science-y stuff): "There was a time in the 1990s when I could identify every major mp3 encoder by sound (back when they were all pretty bad), and could demonstrate this reliably in double-blind testing... [then, in a footnote] If it wasn't the most boring party trick ever, it was pretty close."
