Reverb tanks?

Is there that much difference between different reverb tanks? Can reverb tanks be swapped easily? (Seems like it's just a matter of screwing in another and plugging in the wires?)

My new amp (Ampeg GVT15H) has a *super noisy* reverb tank. The noise is greater than the volume of the reverb trails, I think. So I've just been leaving the reverb fully switched off. With the reverb switched off, the amp is practically silent. (And my Ghost Echo has been getting lots of love as a result.)

My old amp had a really nice reverb tank, with longer times, and no hiss.

So, can I just swap them? Is there voltage differences or anything else to worry about? Even more importantly: is it the reverb tank that's noisy or is it the circuit that drives the reverb tank that's a part of the amp? If its noise from lights and poor wiring, would shielding help? Trying to explore this problem from all angles.

Swapping out tanks is no problem but it sounds like it's the internal circuitry of the Amp... Unplug the Tank and switch Verb on and see if it makes that noise...

I had a super-noisy reverb tank that seemed to behave similar to what you're describing. I replaced it and all was fine after.
I got a cheap one from Mod. Easy to just pop the new one in.
I think input and output impedance might be an issue. Try to get something that matches.

Some tanks are microphonic. My V4 is like that and pretty much useless because of it.
You can see if that may be the problem by taking the tank out and putting it to the side while leaving it wired up to the amp.
If it doesn't make the noise outside the amp this may be the problem.

You can also kind of check by knocking on the head shell with the reverb on. If you can hear the knocking through the amp it's
could be microphonic.

It's constantly noisy, so I think it's just poorly shielded and picking up noise. The MOD reverb tank pages indicated that there's different ways of attaching the cables and the modern ones do it poorly, leading to noise.

I don't know how to figure out the input and output impedance, since it's not in the manual. I'll try emailing Ampeg but I have some feeling they will tell me I'd be voiding my warranty if I replaced the tank n

I guess that the manufacturer might fix it for me, which is awesome, because it'll still be under warranty. Glad I didn't change anything.
