I'm thinking about switching the pickups on my guitar. It's an italia mondial sportster with Wilkinson WHHB pickups (bridge and neck).
I'm probably going to get rid of the neck pickup as I just don't ever really use it. But I want to see what else is out there being as these pickups sometimes sound like there's a wet blanket over everything. Thought about P90's or some variation of single coils but I have a feeling the hum might piss me off.
I'm playing through a fender concert reverb at the moment. I'd need something that covers a lot of ground. I don't play metal or anything of the sort really but I like to have some variation. They would need to get along with fuzzy pedals as well.
WRHB's that are anything approaching what they used to be are pricey stuff. (See Telenator, Lollar, and Novak.) Most others are cosmetically like WRHB's maybe tuned towards that sound, but not stunningly close. Doesn't mean it'll be a bad pickup for what you're going for, but the near snake oil about the things always bugs me.
If the current neck pickup is four-conductor, it could be a cheap fix to wire the coils in parallel instead of series. Should improve clarity and make it a bit less corpulent. Worth a try before putting out money on something new.
