It basically simulated what turning on all three of the other boosts I used to have sounded like.

Re: Teach me about boosts...
Personally, I love the Super Duper for this kind of thing. Also, as someone else mentioned, using the Reverberator as just a boost has come in handy a few times when I forgot to take any other boost with me.
As far as this goes, I have only heard/owned one pedal that can do it without a hitch. That is the Cornish NG-2. There is really no other pedal on the market (that I'm aware of) that can replicate that sound without actually blowing the tubes and/or transformer of an amp in the process. Granted, it is about an 800 dollar pedal. I made that purchase rather blindly, and saved up for a long time before I could afford it. I figured it could be an investment if nothing else. However, at this point, I don't really want to lose the ability to have that sound on tap.

Just be careful to note how close you are to overdriving your preamp when using boosts. If you've got a screamin' hot pair of ceramic humbuckers driving your front end, a boost pedal is going to give you a little volume and a lot of preamp distortion. If you've got some headroom yet, the boost will get you some extra db's. As far as different boosts, there are honestly a lot, and many of them are very transparent. You. Louder.

Yeah, I found I'm already pretty "loud" with a SG+humbuckers, but with a boost you'll get more of your signal through, and that's where I think a lot of people hear "chime" on a clean boost.
Also, if you've got a boost at the beginning of your chain (for example, a SHO) make sure you don't clip in your modulation. Because that'd be embarassing.
I use my Fuck on the end of my chain as both a boost and an overdrive (dirty boost, essentially.) I've got boosts at the front for solo tones or because I can always use MOAR OVERDRIVES. A boost into a fuzz pedal sounds quite lovely for solos. Different boosts boost different fuzzes differently (lol), so experiment and find what you like.

Re: Teach me about boosts...
If I were you, I'd look into treble boosts. Best gear purchase I've ever made. It just makes my guitar cut through a mix in the best way. It did everything that overdrives and clean boosts couldn't with my amp.
