Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
Maybe this falls into this thread? I dunno.
I've been REALLY fucking depressed lately. Several reasons why. My dad being sick and still unsure of when he'll get better or back to normal. My job blows donkey dick and my new boss keeps fucking my schedule up. My wife is about to lose her job and we are about to have our 3rd kid. I am starting school next month to hopefully get a better career path started but have failed everything else, so have almost no hope. I have hardly any companionship outside of my wife. My only friends are my family and like one other guy I met in the 6th grade.
Sigh. Just a lot of shit piling up. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I have no means to escape. Music is my outlet but I'm losing interest in that lately too. Fuck me.

Ooooh, I know that one. One time when I was first moving away for college (yes before I moved back home
) we had researved a trailer weeks ahead of time. The night before, they call us to say, "Hey, well we don't have the trailer at the store you wanted, but we have one at a store just shy of an hour west of you.SOOOOOOOOOO we would've had to drive to get the trailor, drive home again, then go back the exact same direction we had gone to get the trailor to go where we were going.

Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
I think I'm angsty. I don't think I was this angsty when it was age appropriate for me to be this angsty. What does one do about angst?
It seems like all I can think lately is what's the point? I go work for 30-40 years, retire (or not as the more likely case) and die? Maybe I get married and have kids to try and make it feel meaningful? That sounds like bullshit.
Maybe it's my perspective. Living in Utah, starting my SEVENTH year of undergraduate studies while trying to get accepted into a ph'd program. Which means I won't even start into a career until I'm 30, assuming I can get hired after I get a doctorate in micro-economic theory. And what then? So, I have a career. Do I just use the proceeds to buy synths/pedals so I can sit around with my sonic masterbations until I die?
What it feels like this boils down to is I don't know what to do with my life, so it feels like my life is without purpose/not worth it except to see if I can find a purpose.
Idk, maybe it's just late and I'm lonely, but these thoughts have been plaguing me heavily in recent weeks.

Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
Making things with your passion is far more rewarding and beneficial in the long run. If your passion is music, make it, and don't worry about whether it's necessarily heard by others or leads to other things.
There's this book, Drive, that I really like, especially for this idea:

I love music so much because it affords me infinite levels of mastery to aspire to. I can never fully master making and understanding music.
At the same time, my job affords me similar benefits for what I do every day, and I find I'm way too stressed when I am on a project that doesn't lend itself to an ideal situation in which I'm pursuing all three of mastery, autonomy, and purpose. Luckily, most of our projects fall into having all three, and I feel really energized and driven doing them. But it's my passion; that's why I got this job.

Snipey, if that's true I can neither imagine nor wait for that final graduation ceremony
MEC and Haki, I could definitely see myself having a lot of fun becoming both of those guys, I think it'd end up looking like something from that movie pi. Then my only reason for completing my degree would be to get a job where I could afford that shit
Thanks Mathius
I'm gonna rethink why I'm studying economics, and think about what kind of career would really help me in those three ways you were talking about. Part of the problem with what I'm studying is that I'm a socialist and every one of my Econ professors at this university are libertarians (I'm not even exaggerating, all of them), so right now it seems like the only application for economics is to prove how horrible government is. I know for a fact that economics has a far wider application, and your results are completely dependent on the assumptions you take into the model, but it's hard to keep that perspective when all your professors are always expounding the evils of government anything.

As a socialist leaning towards anarchist, I can tell you that you'll run into this a lot in the real world, too. The tech startup world, which I work in, is full of libertarian capitalists that think that making money produces the ultimate good. Oh, and that more money will make them more happy, when research and common sense say otherwise. I'll argue so far as to say that money, in particular capitalism, corrupts. But money has applications of good in the world when applied to the right problems. There's a couple things off the top of my head:
You'll run into these people your whole life.
They probably won't agree with you on a ton of stuff.
You'll still be expected to work with them.
So listen to what they have to say, don't dismiss them, but let them know that you respect their opinion, even if you don't agree.
Learning how to work collaboratively and compromise isn't really taught in school and it is one of the most important skills. Seriously, I can't stress this enough.
Another thing is to learn how to get them to do what you want through valid means, that is, without straight-out manipulating them like a sociopath. That's right. I'm telling you to learn how to get out of your professors what you want -- they won't offer it willingly.
Hope this helps and isn't just too optimistic / abstract to be applicable.
