Closest I've gotten is locally owned The Low End bass shop. They have like fuckin' every desirable bass in there EVAR. Got to play a '67 or some odd jazz bass (out of the 4 or more that are there), CT's, Foderas, Benavente, Elrick, Sadowsky (and SOOO many more) and not to mention the super-crazy-high end amps and cabs they have everywhere with cables just laying around. Pick 'em up and PLAY. So cool! It's not like GC or other shops where you have to ask for a goddamn cable to play a $400 bass or guitar while they breathe down your neck. Cables on the floor, "Oh HAI $10k Fodera, I pway smokes on teh waterz on joo nao???"
lol. DOOD! i was SO tempted to play Smoke On The Water or slowly, ham handedly bang through a major C scale! guy that handed me the bass got all japanesy and shit and made it almost a ritual. powered up the amp, waited a hinute, stoically removed the price tag, plugged in, switched the High End Amp I Dunno What It Was I Only Had Eyes For RAINBOW, played some tasty harmonic laden stuff for a minute (kinda annoyed me. i fucking HATE when sales people do the whole Hey Gai. I Can Playz TOO thing.), then handed the bass over palms up.
"wowwwww.... gawd.... this is so...... C *thunk* D *thwank rattle* E# no.... no that's not it.... CEEEEEEEEEE *wrabble wrabble wrabble*."

I actually don't know. I've not had any experience with boutique basses and kind of almost don't want to. I mean I'm going to be trying a Dingwall soon, but that seems different to me. Right?
Dream bass? Musicman Gamechanger. I know. Fuck you guys.

Does an $85,000 rocking chair count?
Because I was too scared to sit in it.

Hell yeah, Low End is where my homie bought his Wal MkII a few months back. I've talked with him on the phone too (Brian, I think) and he's such a nice dude.

01) not knowing shit about basses and
02) being distracted by seeing DAT SCROLLWORK as soon as i got in the shop
there were some Ken Smiths, Fedora, F-Basses, buncha Alembic...... some Fenders that i assume were lust worthy but see 01).

Re: Dream gear? Hands-on?
I once got to play a five string one of these.

Which is not a cello it is a 4/4 double bass [around 6 feet tall], it was a monster!

Re: Dream gear? Hands-on?
Today I played:
'60 Jazzmaster
'60's Bass VII (sorry, don't remember the year)
'65 Jaguar
'73 Tele Deluxe
'56 Les Paul Special
'60s Ric 12 string
'68 Mosrite Ventures
'55 Gretsch Roundup
I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, none of them were plugged in but it was pretty damned cool. Honestly my favourite of the bunch were probably the LP and the Tele Deluxe, but I really liked the Ric 12 string too. Well and I'd be pretty stoked to have walked out with the Jazzmaster too. Lots of other even more insanely expensive guitars there too, but those were mostly out of reach.
I was surprised, the guy working there said hello to me as I walked in the door, but didn't say another word to me as I picked up thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of guitars to strum away on.

I played a Bogner Ecstasy at some snobby ass music store, then I was like oh yeah I'm not a lawyer and bought strings.
