I think the new version of the AxFX works this way. If true, it would be much easier to capture what you are after.
Well, by using mics you can put your choice of cabinet inside too.

The thing that it appears to be missing to make it work is that it also needs to 'model' the power amp and cab you're using for the output of the thing - to make it sound like the original amp, you need to eliminate those variables. I can't believe that one escaped them - even a full range setup imparts some color.
