First, new prog is bad. Rush should be tried for crimes against humanity.
Second, I second triphop. Portishead's first two albums are jazzy but dark. still accessible.

Why introduce someone to the one genre worse than top 40? 
Personally. I'd start with as many genres as possible and narrow down the favorites then tell her to make a pandora station. duh.
