Should I replace my mxr phase 90

Post by Casavettes »

With a subdecay baby quasar? Is it true bypass?

mxr phase seems to mess with the sound of my chain sometimes.

The Baby Quasar's true bypass. The Baby Quasar is no more.

Unless you're picking up a used one, you might be thinking of the Quantum Quasar?

My phavorite phaser song as of late:

The Sibling and the Quantum Quasar are very different phasers.

The Sibling is probably based on the Small Stone, like the Whetstone. OTA based designs.

Quantum Quasar's a VCA based design.

Sibling has basic controls: Rate, Depth, Level and a slow/fast switch

Quantum Quasar has: Speed, Regeneration and 6 LFO waveforms

Awesome R.G. Keen article:

Oh, I forgot:

Baby Quasar: Rate, Voice, Depth, Freq (VCA based design)

If you like the simplicity of the phase 90 but don't like the mxr, you can't go wrong with the whirlwind orange box.

Baby Quasar can also be easily tweaked (w/voice & freq knobs) to get more vowely/"chewy"/filtery, as well as more "traditional" phaser sounds. It's good stuff!

Yes yes yes. I am not a phan of mxr phasers and I'm in love with subdecay's. The baby quasar is probably going to sound a lot like the big one, just without all the crazy waveforms. I think it even goes near ring mod speeds. And the vca design or whatever it is, is beautful. It reminds me a lot of the Faye sing which seems real popular here.

i like the phase 90 sometimes. depends where i have it and what fuzz i'm working with. if i put it after my dirt transmitter theres a nasty shitty sounding volume jump. If i put it before it tends to either disappear or just not sound as...full? i'm assuming it has to do with its wonderful buffered bypass.

i thought about the whirlwind dev.

thanks for the deets chankgeez :)
does the quasar stay pretty loyal to the dry signal? i liked the idea of the volume control on the sibling...unless thats not really there for a boost.

The big quasar has a mix knob from no wet to either only or plenty of wet signal. If I remember right, I think subdecay (or someone else) pointed out that the mix knob was cool because most phasers are just set at default with 50/50 mix and the quasar had a mix knob so yeah. But I think the baby quasar is set at 50/50 but with the voice and frequency knob, you can get a multitude of intensities. With the voice at noon, you get a pretty dry phaser tone and as you move it left or right, it becomes a lot more present. The freq knob is just how "high" or "low" the phasing sounds.
Sorry if none of that makes much sense, I don't really know a ton about phasers.

Yep, me too.

Between her playing in the Contortions and Bush Tetras, Pat Place is one of my favorite guitarists.

I'll add in the Earthquaker Grand Orbiter to the mix. Sounds great doing either classic 90 sounds or wild, chaotic, swirly goodness.

My one gripe about the new quantum is the lack of depth control. I dunno, might still have to check it out myself.

I like my INFANEM Faye Sing.
Doing that classic sound with a deep voice and also some manual phasing.
