Busting a Nut

Post by DallasLemonade »

Alright, so the nut on my jazzmaster cracked after it fell off the stand face first. Is this an easy fix (just get new nut, glue, tah dah?) or do i need to take it to a tech?

How badly did it crack?

Does it effect string retention? Is it totally cracked or is only the edge chipped?

Just based on the title, I feel like this should be in the Dear Behndy advice thread

it cracked in the low e slot. completely, and now the low e hits the first fret when played open. I tried to raise the bridge to compensate but to no avail. :grumpy:

Yeah, you need to replace it.

As far as repairs go, I don't think doing it yourself would be too difficult. Never done it myself. There're instructions online, I'm sure. The Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Erlewine also has a blurb on how to do it. As would, I imagine, any other repair book. Assuming that your (broken) nut just pops right out, the new one should fit right in. You may have to do some filing and/or shaping. Make sure you've got it at the correct height before you glue it in (take note of the height of the old one before you remove it).
