Yeah, smooth but crunchy. I'd go with a muff. NYC? Black Russians are pretty bassy (and don't have any cream), but they can be real smooth and nice, at a good price. Although I'd imagine they're getting harder and harder to find now.

1973 would mean it's probably a triangle muff. Rams-head starting coming out in '73, so it could be that if it was brank-freaking-new. I'd lean towards a triangle muff. I know that Wren and Cuff make the Tri-Pie, you could check that out. If that's too pricey, I'm sure MadeByMike could make you one for a little over a hundred bucks (that's what he charges for the Ram's head and IC Muffs).

I Googled extensively, and nobody's sure WHAT Steve was using for fuzz. he's confused enough that he says he used a Big Muff in 1966. depending on who you believe, it's a Big Muff, a Tone Bender, a Fuzz Face, or (my candidate 'cos the recordings don't sound like the other options) a built-in fuzz circuit on the Acoustic amp he was using which allegedly was based on a Fuzz Rite. to me his 70s playing doesn't sound anything like a Muff or FF, but could be a Mk III Bender.

Stevie Winwood is awesome on guitar, and his tone is great, I am so used to listen to him on keyboards. Must check more of his stuff.

Steve Winwood is so ridiculously underrated, it's almost criminal. He was in Spencer Davis at 14, and then formed Traffic, Blind Faith, and then all of his huge solo shit. One of the unsung heroes of classic rock

Yeah, I'm a mild-to-huge Blind Faith fan. That album is tits. Illegal tits.
But the only Traffic song I really like is You Can All Join In, which has no discernible Winwood... I don't think.
