I kind of skimmed this thread so excuse any repetition, but if I were trying to show a top 40 person new music I'd start in the same area. More pop music. Tegan and Sara, The White Stripes, Weezer... then when she likes something ask her what she likes about it, what does she want to hear more of. If she likes say the White Stripes, and she says she likes the voice (yeah, that's a stretch but whatever) then I'd suggest more unique kind of strained vocalists like Arcade fire, Bright Eyes, etc.

Then out of nowhere blast some Sleep or Deerhoof, just to keep them on their toes.
