.........what's the downside to doing a hand written receipt?

I mean......I know it's weird....but other than the 60 seconds, ink, and a loose leaf piece of paper you lose to do it......what's the anxiety?

Well the question was more "if he claims the item as a tax ride off do I, the seller, suffer because of it?" and less "I'm a lazy sod who can't be arsed writing anything". For one... I wouldn't write essays each time I post something on the internet

Judging by the responses I gather it's "no it doesn't affect me at all" but as mentioned I'll triple check with my uncle as he's the hot-shot accountant in the family. I just thought it was like "this guy gets a tax ride off for his item while the other guy is seen to be making [x] amount of profit so he doesn't deserve [x] benefit" which is a crock because I listed it on eBay and said all sales were final and never agreed upon a receipt prior to purchase. In fact at first I was going to ship it to him and he thought the courier fees were too expensive or something and changed his mind. He only mentioned it in the last message when he said the time he'll be coming to pick it up. So even if all of what he's said is "totally legal" then it's "totally bullshit" that I should accept his offer in the first place given there were many other parties happy to purchase it and not ask for a receipt (which, lets remind ourselves again, is the complete norm not to get one when buying privately).

Ignorant answer that I think I've heard somewhere: I think the earnings would have to be over a certain number before it's considered "claimable". Like if I do a few bass lessons....and it only amounts to $400 for the entire year, that's not a number that I would have to claim......yeah, accountant uncle would know more.

I’m going to go with the buyer on this one.
Having a receipt shows that the buyer wasn’t receiving stolen goods.
It’s always a good Idea when buying high priced items from individuals.

While you are honest and the amp wasn’t stolen the buyer is just being on the safe side.

I wouldn't have worried about it, and written one out if asked.

If the guy got stupid or petulant or stupid, tell him eBay is his receipt and call it good if he didn't ask you to provide one prior to bidding etc.

Depends on if you are your own business (Incorporated, LLC, etc.) and how much you make.

And even then I think you can only be in the red for "job expenses" for like two consecutive years before it officially--in the eyes of the IRS--becomes a hobby.

Dude.
If it was purchased on eBay, there is an electronic trail for the transaction and the buyer has all the proof/receipts he needs.

I fail to see how this is a "you" problem.

TOTALLY!

Everytime I pick something up on Ebay I SERIOUSLY get 5 emails from them. Receipt, notification that I won the auction, the paypal transaction through Ebay, and the Paypal transaction. It's nuts

Those five mails are designed so you feel bad, and to get rid of the bad feeling, you have to buy something else.

It's how it works for me anyway.
