Boss PS2 or PS5?

Post by psychpoet »

I may be doing a trade for a Boss pitchshifting pedal. The guy has the PS2 and the PS5. If you were going to take one of them, which one would you trade for?

Anyone who has used these pedals, any feedback would be helpful!

PS5 has more pitch shifting options.
PS2 has feedback and oscillations.

PS2. Although I've never owned a PS2, I used to have a PS5 and grew to hate it.

Get the PS2, if you don't like it, then sell it and buy a PS5 and like twenty 40's.

I've had both. The PS-2 kinda sucks as an octave/pitch shifting pedal, not unusable, but an OC-2, OC-3, PS-3, PS-5 or PS-6 are all better octaves in the Boss family. The PS-5 can utilize and expression pedal, does intelligent pitch shifting and sounds better overall. But for noisy delay fun the PS-2 is cool and that's the only real reason it gets hype.

Depends a lot on what you want to use it for.

Twitchy, oldschool bad tracking and noise wierd are your friends with the 2. The 5 you can get to do some normal stuff sometimes.

I have the PS-2, I really like it, a lot of weirdness, but it really can't do decent pitch shifting, but that's why it is cool of course, I have no experience with the ps-5 though..

it has the same functions and layout
and i freakin enjoyed it immensly
ive never actually used the ps-5 so i cant compare
but it was absolutely dead silent and the detune function sounds awesome(never noticed bypass problems)
i stomped the shit out of it a bunch, and the dude who owns it(who took it back and uses it ll the time now)is a big dude
definatly doesnt go easy on it and its held up fine,i think he uses an exp pedal with it
they do this old school crusty hardcore kinda shit and when he lays off the distortion that thing really sings
its the ultra shifter/harmonist-us600,bright green cant miss it
if i cant find a ps-5 used fora decent price, im gonna get the behringer

Thanks for all of the feedback. Everyone of you have very valid points. I'm going to get the chance to actually try both the PS2 and PS5 out so I'll let you all know which one I pick. Right now I'm leaning towards the PS2 as I'm more into noise. Hopefully I can control it. Another reason is that Behringer pitchshifter clone that Ryan mentioned actually sounds pretty dead on compared to the PS5 and it's under $50, which is awesome. Also anyone hear elements of EQDs Rainbow Machine and Organizer in both pedals:

Put them both in a feedback loop, and hell yeah you're gonna hear elements of the Rainbow Machine.

My old band used a PS-2 on a mic'd clarinet.
It definitely worked for dropping the tone of a woodwind.
On guitar, the pitchshifting is real, uh janky.
But for weird noise stuff, yes.
I actually really like the weird chimey qaulity of the delay too.
Plus the thing will go nuts and freak people's brains off.

Never used a PS-5 but the clarinet guy tried it and didn't like
it. Too pussy he said.

I know you only had a choice between the ps-2 and the ps-5 but my favorite has always been the ps-3. Definitely try one when you get a chance; you get a nice chorus out of mode 8 and there is always mode 7. The delays (mode 1-3) are unique in a sense that if you turn the feedback up and let the delays go on for a while they get grittier and less pristine than a regular digital delay.

Also, everyone will tell you that the ps-3 is all about mode 7 and it's shimmer; I have never really been a fan of shimmer myself. But sex ensues when you turn to mode 7, put the pitch around 12 o clock (it is a sweet spot that you will hear when the pitch isn't really shifted at all) and turn up the feedback. It will start doing this inverse pitch shift echo of your original signal rather than the shimmer that happens when you turn the pitch up. It is not the same as reverse echo; it is hard to describe but it is amazing and if you turn the balance all the way up, you get these unique volume swells. Use it with a delay with some modulation and reverb and it is post rock ( or noise rock if you turn and some fuzz and strum some chords) for days.

The ps-3 has a lot more options that the ps-2 in my opinion and I never need those major key knobs that the new pitch shifters as I am more into noise rock and shoegaze. I love the ps-3 for what it is and is definitely one of my favorite pedals.

Just my two cents.
