Help with my first Bass Rig

Hi

So I decided that I should take up Bass, i've got a decent enough guitarr rig with a good new guitar on the way but there's never enough Bassists going around and really I just want to jam with others without having the unfortunate guitarist connotation. Haven't got a massive budget, maybe $700 au for Bass and Amp for something at home or just enough to jam with if i'm lucky.

I've got an Orange PPC212 w/v30s that I play through, i've heard lots of conflicting information about using Bass amps through a Guitar cab. My thoughts are probably not to rely on it, but could it be a viable temporary solution at lower volumes? My room is pretty small so something not gigantic would be great. I also want an amp that can take pedals well, I have a couple laying around that would like to set up a B pedalboard.

As for the Basses, i'm trying to choose between a Sterling SUB 4, Squier VM JBass or even an Affinity Squier. Been looking on fleabay and only really find Basses out of my range or just overpriced cheap and nasty ones.

Yeah you're not going to want to run any sort of bass through the Orange, even at low volumes you can do damage to your speakers, especially if you're going to be running the bass with effects.

Having never personally played any of the basses that you've listed, I can't give TOO much feedback, but the VM JBass does seem nice and Squier are DEFINITELY stepping up their game.

As far as bass amps go, I'd personally look into Acoustic/Peavey SS stuff in general. It can be had pretty cheaply, and those two brands are known for being loud and reliable for the money

Yeah, if you go to Craigslist (or something similar) and put out an ad saying that you're looking for older Peavey bass amps, there's a pretty good chance of getting one for cheap. I love the 400 Series, very conducive to doomy toans.

The Squier VM series is awesome, you really can't go wrong with either the J bass or the Jag bass, the only real difference is that the Jag has a P pickup in addition to a J, so gives you another tone you can use. They're both great basses though.

As for amps, I agree that an old used Peavey is the best bang of the buck you're going to get. Then again, since you're down in Aussie, not sure how many of those you're going to see locally, and they're gonna be expensive to ship down there, since they weigh a ton.

The low-end Genz Benz shuttle (the 3.0) can be had for around 300 used, and has enough oomph to jam with a decently loud band.

For cabs, the Carvin red-eye cabs can be had really cheap and sound pretty damn good. Avatar and Peavey are also reasonable in price, especially used.

try checking your local craigslist for old 80s vantage/other matsumoku built basses, they're pretty doomy looking and can be had for pretty cheap. a lot of em are set neck and play nicely from my experience too

Yeah. There's a plenty of great unsung basses that might be just within Your price range, like, Peavey T-40 or somthing.

Heh, they're a little out of my range and mostly unavailable in Australia. Looking at a Squier CV JBass, $370 new - really can't complain.

In terms of a decent combo amp (decided to keep it small, upgrade if I need in the future). I know about the great, cheap quality guitar combos like a Blues Jr, are any Bass equivalents to amps that just sound as good (in a way). If that makes any sense.

Then again - that classic vibe with maple body and neck, that one delivers. And with a little extra You can later upgrade to better pickups, if still staying in the same price range.

I agree, other than changing the strings and a proper setup ever CV Jazz I’ve tried played and sounded great.
Amp; also go used.
A nice practical choice is the Peavey TNT or TKO.
They sound really good and are dirt cheap on the used market.

Peavey TNT. If You can live with their limitter, You'll be fine volume-wise.

I've tried practice amps (=50 watts tops? of at least Marshall, Laney, Fender, Hughes & Kettner, Hartke, Peavey, Yamaha, Roland, HH, Musicman... what else? Can't keep track. But they all are perfect ly fine for practise amps, for home.

The peavey TKO is pretty awesome I have had mine for 8 years and have not ever had a problem with it. HUGe range of tones in that thing.
