Too many low gain "amplike" overdrives?

Post by zRobertez »

We all know that people love one low gain, "warm", "amplike" overdrives. But if you stack one with another or stack both with an amp! :joy: Does it get too warm ie muddy? Or do they all stack well and sound beautiful? Or does it just depend on what pedal?

I've slowly grown to hate my DS-1 over the summer and I've narrowed it down to a fuck :yay: and an overdrive from Foot Fetish Pedals on facebook. <--Look em up! Cool company, cool guy. I know the fuck goes well with an amp, but if you have three warm overdrives, can it be "too warm"?

you have to mess with the EQ but I do it and it works for me

Currently I run a Mantra and a Monarch plus a hartman Rat and I run an MI audio boost n buff into the front with great results
again EQ tweaking is important to make sure everything stacks

I've never been much of an overdrive stacker. But then again I've not been much of an overdrive guy. I just play loud so my amps overdrive naturally :idk:

But if I was to stack low gain and low gain overdrives, I'd have to agree it'd be all in the EQ. I think it could get really muddy really quick.

I was never a big stacker either and then I got my hands on a few really good ones........wow.......the combination of tones is amazing.

It helps that I keep my amps pretty much squeaky clean

Pretty much this.

I generally dislike overdrives in general and "amplike" overdrives in particular, but I do love stacking lower gain gain devices.

You may wanna try a "boost" of some sort instead of an "overdrive" or various combinations thereof. Some pedals stack well, some don't.

EQ is your friend when multiple stacking. it's tough though because some settings sound rad on their own then when stacked into something else they are too heavy/thin/redundant/etc.

I know! But I just feel if I'm gonna spend my money, I want something a little more exciting than a boost... I could get one eventually.
But I was planning on if I get both to keep the gain real low volume up on one and just normal on the other. Just to add a little more gain and to boost some.
I don't know. I was just worried it could not sound great but I've heard the fuck mixes well with a ton of stuff. Good job smallsound/bigsound!
And my amp's gain is no where near cranked and the other overdrive would probably be a gainy boost with a tone stack deal going on more than gain stack.

WTF are you talking about?

It's not the pedal itself, it's how you use it.

Boosts of all sorts are cheap and plentiful. You've got a lot of experimenting to do. There's no way to know if they'll sound great together unless you try 'em in combination.

As Brian said, pedals that sound one way on their own may sound wildly different when stacked.

Doesn't always work this way. Depends on the individual pedals involved. You'll surely have to make some setting adjustments.

yeah from what you wrote it sounds like a boost and overdrive would do the trick for you - boost into drive. drive set low for low gain stuff, hit the boost and you dirty up the drive.
...of course you could do that with two separate drives as well and you'll have the addition of a little more flexibility with your sound.

yeah this is in no way dumb
There is a whole thread on monarch stacking in the EQD stuff.

I know a boost doesn't sound exciting but sometimes it does cool things to all your other pedals,
