Speaker Choice

Post by Bassboar »

I'm in the process of acquring a cheap as dirt 2x15 cab.
Trouble is, the drivers are both gone.
I'm keen to replace them with some new ones.
What do you guys like for 15'' speakers?
Any suggestions would be awesome.
Thanks guys.

The SROs in my kustom cab are pretty awesome, super heavy and can get sizzly with fuzz.

These are nice and fairly inexpensive:

If you can find some used Peavey Black Widows, those are nice too.

...This is also relevant to my interests, because one of my sro's seems to be blown out.

How important is the volume of the cabinet?
Do I need to measure to make sure the speakers match up?
Or is this just a bunch of mumbo jumbo?

No, that is important.
I can't seem to find it right now but there was this calculator program where you input all of the speaker specs as well as the volume of your cab, and it shows you a graph of frequencies that would be accentuated and the overall range 'n stuff. Could prolly find it on Talkbass.

But long story short, Black Widows are coo' and sturdy and easily replaceable.

is it a bad idea to have two different types of speakers in a cab?

Probably it's not ideal. But it works for a lot of people.

From what I can see, the Eminence legends MEC recommended line up pretty well with the cab.
I think those are my best option.

My amp does 475 watts at 4 ohms, I'd like to be able to keep the impedance the same with the new speakers.

Just wire them up in parallel:

You'll have a 600w cab with 4ohm resistance.

Black widows are a tad pricey for me.
I have to wait 2 weeks to order the Emineneces from the shop.
But there is no rush.
Thanks for all the help guys.
