#18 stock SD-1 vs. Modded SD-1

Post by AC128 »

Image

settings are 12 11 12 o'clock on both pedals

the lower waveform is the stock pedal by FullCustom, the upper waveform is my modded SD-1
Image

the orange curve is the stock pedal by FullCustom, the blue curve is my modded SD-1

about the mods:
***** Boss SD-1 5-Star Ge Keeley Mod *****

Keeley Custom Shop designed this mod to enhance the tone and functionality of the SD-1.

Freely copy and distribute. We have the right to change our modifications at any time without notification. It is fun to watch what big name people use the mods.

* Board Number, New part, Old part, Reason, Where to get the part
* C10 --> Metal Stack Film 1uF, remove electrolytic, increased fidelity, digikey
* C7--> Metal Stack Film 1uF, remove electrolytic, increased fidelity, digikey
* R6 --> 2.4k ohm metal film, 4.7k, increased distortion, digikey
* C3--> 0.1uf metal stack film, 0.047uf, fidelity and bass response, digikey
* C2--> 0.1uf metal stack film, 0.018 fidelity and bass response, digikey
* R2--> 620k ohm metal film, 470k ohm, increased input impedance, better bypass, digikey
* Add 47pF cap across diodes in clipping section to smooth out distortion, just like TS9, radio shack

On some older units, short out D3 and the 470 ohm resistor in the power supply section to increase the voltage to the circuit. This increase the headroom and gain. Newer units have it shorted already.

Here is the tricky part of our mod, take a germanium (Ge) transistor and use the Base-Emitter junction (legs) of the device and use it in place of D6. If you use a PNP transistor, the Base will be the negative or cathode side, the Emitter will be the anode. Here is a diode drawing Cathode---|<----Anode. This increases the amount of distortion produced by the pedal, it also sound really nice. Try this! Don't leave it out! It's fun.

#23 Nobels FU-Z Fuzz

Post by AC128 »

Image

The Nobels Fuzz was a very pleasant surprise for me. I bought it for only a couple of Euros, but it quickly became a favourite of mine.
Excellent build quality, clever/quick battery access and stepped pots. I like the steps because it's easy to get exactly THAT setting again and here it's been implemented so well, that the markings around the pots line up perfectly with every second click. A minor detail to some, but I like the attention to detail.

Another reason why it's one of my favs is the range of the gain and tone pots. While the gain moves from a nice hint of fuzz to impressive amounts of clipping, the tone control is one of the best I've come across so far. Quite often, the useable range is somewhere around 12 o'clock, with useless mush on the left and icepick in your ear on the right. @ 7 o'clock The Nobels creates very nice dark fuzz that sounds kinda like rolling back the tone on your guitar's neck single coil. Actually, I like it better since it doesn't attenuate the signal, resulting in less fuzz. Turning up the tone increases the high end content nicely, adding bite and definition while remaining ear-friendly.

To document this, I took five readings of the Nobels, each with gain @ 9:30 and level @ 3 o'clock. The Tone knob was set like this (o'clock):
A = 7:00
B = 9:30
C = 12:00
D = 2:30
E = 5:00

Tone @ 7:00

#24 SD Tweak Fuzz

Post by AC128 »

Seymour Duncan Tweakfuzz, Volume at 3 o'clock, Gain at 12 o'clock
The 'Tweak' knob is a kind of tone control, that gives you access to six pre-set EQ curves.
I played one years ago when they came out and wasn't too impressed, but after buying one a couple of months ago I really like it.
Maybe my amp at that time didn't gel with it, dunno, it's a pretty good bargain second hand.

#25 Octavio DIY Octave Fuzz

Post by AC128 »

Image

A great, sweet sounding Octave Fuzz pedal originally build by someone in England - I believe.

Boost (Fuzz) at 12:30, Volume at 5 o'clock - very high output whith a very low noise floor - nice!
