Now go and plug in your Elements, paint your pickups fluoro green with a paint pen and shred some shit. I am assuming your guitar is already detuned.

Awesome Greigy! This album, Domination, is one of my top favourite metal albums ever. Geeez those guys were cool... I don't love their newest albums so much but back in the early/mid 90s they were the most badass band ever. I had a neon green Universe 7 string in 94, bought it because of Trey, and lent it to a friend around 2000... never to be seen again.

I saw them touring this album in Edmonton in 95 or 96, at a tiny metal bar on Jasper Ave with about 30 people.. the band was right on the floor and we were all standing about 2 feet away from them, it was nuts, totally intimate but full blown loud badass death metal. It was incredible!

The palm mutes and riffs and tone of Trey are my idea of perfection though, I love his style. I can live without all the solos and noodling but when they set their sights to kicking butt, it rules.

Hell yes, love 'em.

It's been a while since I listened to them but they were a big influence early on in one of my bands. My guitarist idolized Trey.

:)

I didn't start getting into Morbid Angel until around 2001 - I had (and still have) few metal head friends so my journey into the "underground" was fairly slow. I was listening to a fair bit of Swedish melodic death - Hypocrisy, Arch Enemy, At the Gates etc and then I heard the main riff to Where the Slime Live which just destroyed me, the same way as Pantera did the first time I heard them in the early 90s. After listening to Domination the next step was of course God of Emptiness.

You're right Ryan, Trey is one of the all time guitar greats, both tone wise and playing wise.

I actually love Gateways to Annihilation - listening to it now with my 1 year old son, although he is more interested in hiding behind the door and popping out "unexpectedly"... Both Gateways and Formulas are great, but man, Heretic and the new one. Wow.

Some other Morbidish stuff to listen to today:

The heaviest shit since Domination:

Steve Tucker's new stuff (which positively shreds)

And round out with some more Morbid, from Evil D when he was evil:

That's cool you put up that Gojira video, From Mars to Sirius is one of the best death metal albums ever in my opinion! Plus I flippin love Mars and Sirius and really want to go to those places.

Nader Sadek is new to me and very cool, thanks!

You know, the only other metal band that I really really loved when I was a teen and I really really love to this day is Crowbar. You dig Crowbar?

I haven't actually listened to Crowbar... I'm a sludge virgin. I remember listening to some Crowbar and Soylent Green, musta been around 2003, but I just didn't get into it. But, my tastes have evolved a lot since then. Was jamming on Down's NOLA the other day, so maybe the next step is Crowbar. Where to start for the uninitiated?

As for music from my teens that I still dig... I don't really listen to Pantera a lot but when I do I still can't keep my neck from banging. Megadeth get plenty of spins as well. Otherwise most of the other music that's been with me for years is stuff I grew up with via Dad - Sabbath, Maiden and AC/DC.

as an aside - I saw Gojira open for In Flames in Stockholm (felt to me like the bill was upside down, but whatever). Best. Live band. Ever. MASSIVE sound.

That's too cool you got to see Gojira live, must have ruled!

This is my favourite track on From Mars to Sirius, one of my favourite death metal songs of all time!

Crowbar just has a style that I love... he's always yelling about pain and suffering and being strong and the music is generally slow and heavy with the best grooves/jams in metal. Plus the crushingly heavy palm mutes... they're just exactly my kind of band and I've been a huge fan since 93 or 94 when their self titled album came out.

Here's an awesome track off the album called Crowbar:

Here's an awesome track off the album Odd Fellow's Rest:

Here's an awesome track off the album Sonic Excess in its Purest Form:

I dig all their albums, those are some personal faves but I could have put 50 videos in here, they've got tons of awesome songs and albums and they're all pretty much in the same style except the guitar tones differ slightly... to me, Kirk Windstein (singer/guitar for Crowbar) is the ultimate master of power chords and palm mutes, nobody crushes like that guy and he's always upset about something.

Shit, what a breakdown in All I had I Gave! My headphones are currently in the rehearsal room, can't wait to listen to this with decent speakers! I can also confirm that my tastes have apparently evolved - can't understand what I didn't get about these guys! Google tells me that there are differing ideas about how Kirk got/gets his guitar tone, but Boss Metalzone gain on 0 and level pumped... almost makes me want to try one again... almost.

edit: Yes, From Mars to Sirius is my fave as well. I have all of Gojira's albums and like all of them for different reasons, but From Mars just hurts my face with its awesomeness. My band Centre of Gravity usually covers Oroborus live, but we might have to change it up for From the Sky, or maybe Ocean Planet. Just wish I could sing like Joe does - that half melodic growly shout thing. So metal.

Glad you like it, Matt! Crowbar is all about badass breakdowns... every song has that kind of badassery in it!

I got a Triple Rectifier back in 97 in an attempt to sound like Crowbar.. the red/modern high gain channel on the old style is totally that kind of super bassy and saturated tone, sounds a lot like them through the years, like they use that platform and then goose it further.

Your band must be really cool... I dig the name too...

Yes. We are cool.
:omg:

Nah, I'm really happy with the music we're creating, we've got an awesome drummer and I can't wait to get some new material on tape. We've got the drum tracks recorded for a release but we haven't been able to get into the studio for the guitars yet, but as soon as it's done I'll put it up in one of the elements threads. Hopefully October.
